Rooney loving free role at Man Utd

Wayne Rooney admits he's enjoying his free role.
Rooney was outstanding in victory at Schalke this week.
Rooney roams free picking the ball up, linking play, and getting forward himself to score goals. He said: "I think I am playing well at the minute in a new role which I played a lot when I was younger and I'm enjoying it.
"Chicharito is playing fantastic, and with Giggsy in central midfield, it seems to be working.
"I understand the way Chicharito plays and knew if I was playing up front with him I would have to change and play a bit deeper and it is working. He is scoring a lot of important goals.
"And I am enjoying getting on the ball and linking play and getting a few goals as well. You can influence games a lot more from there as well.
"Sometimes when you play up front on your own you're not in the game as much, you're waiting for your opportunity to score.
"When you play in the position I'm in you're always involved as you can get on the ball and create and score."

Dad admits Man Utd following Standard Liege star Witsel

The father of Standard Liege star Axel Witsel has revealed the interest of Manchester United.
Thierry Witsel admits several European heavyweights are tracking his son ahead of the summer market.
"I am aware of the interests of Fiorentina by reading the newspapers, but for me I have not been contacted by anyone. Direct contact between the clubs? Honestly I cannot say," said Witsel Snr.
"The interest of AC Milan and Manchester United? The exact same answer.
"There are many scouts in Liege every time he plays for Standard, but I cannot tell you exactly which clubs they are and they may not necessarily be there to see only Axel."

Schalke defender Metzelder: Man Utd on another planet

Schalke defender Christoph Metzelder admits Manchester United are "on another planet".
United outplayed Schalke to win 2-0 in their Champions League semi this week.
"United are on another planet, but we are back 'on earth'.
"Against Inter Milan it was only two magical nights for us," admitted Metzelder.

Spartak Moscow rejected chance to sign Man Utd star Evra for nothing

Former Spartak Moscow sports director Yuri Pervak admits they came close to signing fullback Patrice Evra.
Pervak says they could have signed the French ace for nothing.
He revealed: "Evra was available on a free transfer from Monaco.
"All that we needed to do was to pay his agent, but the people responsible said he had a bad temper and refused to buy him."

Van der Sar fed-up with retirement questions

Edwin van der Sar is growing tired about questions over his retirement.
Van der Sar, 40, admitted he had become annoyed at being asked whether he would change his mind about quitting.
“I’ve just got sick and tired of the question,” he said.
“Maybe it would have been better not to have announced my retirement and, after the last game, say ‘OK, that’s it’. That probably would have been better.
“It would be nice to finish my career at Wembley winning the Champions League, yeah.
“It’s a better place to bow out than, say, against a lesser team in the league with nothing to play for. But first we have to overcome Schalke in the return leg and hopefully put on a performance for our fans also.”

Man Utd to outbid Bayern Munich for Neuer

Manchester United are ready to make a massive offer for Schalke goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.
The Mirror says Sir Alex will make a £24m bid to blow Bayern Munich out of the water and clinch the signing of Neuer.
Alex Ferguson has learned no deal between Schalke and Munich is in place, and with the German giants unwilling to pay more than £20m he wants to launch one last bid to get his man.
And an offer of £24m could be too much for Bayern to match, leaving Ferguson in pole position to sign the man regarded as one of the world’s best goalkeepers.

Evra feels SAF has found Rooney's best position

Patrice Evra feels boss Sir Alex has found Wayne Rooney's best position after victory at Schalke.
Operating in his newly adopted position behind strike partner Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez, Rooney excelled against the Germans, playing with a sense of freedom that allowed the England star to dictate the game from various areas of the Veltins-Arena pitch.
It's a position he has made his own, according to Reds team-mate Evra: “I think Wayne has found his position. When he’s a little bit behind the striker, he gets more touches of the ball.
“I also think Wayne can play as a number 10. He likes to give good balls, and he scores. From behind, maybe he’s more dangerous. I think Wazza is happy to play there as well.”

Man Utd wrapping up deal for Welsh prospect Declan Dalley

Manchester United are finalising a deal for Welsh teen Declan Dalley.
The Daily Star says Dalley will complete his move to Man Utd today.
The 16 year-old centre-half was released by Cardiff recently and joins United as a free agent.
Dalley is a lifelong United fan.

Dimitar Berbatov moves closer to Manchester United exit as contract talks break down

Dimitar Berbatov’s contract talks with Manchester United have broken down and the Premier League’s leading scorer could be heading out of Old Trafford this summer.

Berbatov was told the club were ready to hand him a two-year extension to his current deal, which runs out in in June 2012, during initial negotiations just before Christmas and was confident of putting pen to paper before the end of the season.

But when the Bulgarian returned to the negotiating table earlier this year, the offer had been downgraded to a one-year rolling deal, albeit on improved terms.

United are prepared to hike his wages from £80,000-a-week to around £120,000-a-week as reward for his role in propelling the club to a six-point lead in the Premier League table.

However, there has been no indication from the Old Trafford hierarchy over the last six weeks that a longer contract will be on offer.

Berbatov, who did not travel with the squad to Gelsenkirchen for Tuesday night’s semi-final first leg against Schalke because of a groin injury, is unhappy that he has been relegated down the United pecking order in that time despite heading the Premier League scoring charts with 21 goals.

“The combination of Berbatov turning 30 [in January] and the rise of Javier Hernandez has changed things,”

“Hernandez was not expected to perform as well as he has and the return of Wayne Rooney to top form has also weakened Berbatov’s case for a longer contract.”
It now seems increasingly likely that the former Tottenham striker will leave Old Trafford at the end of the season following an often difficult three-year spell at the club.

Despite his age, he will not be short of suitors, although United will want to recoup at least half of the club record £30.75 million fee they paid Spurs for the player in August 2008. Sir Alex Ferguson will then turn his attention to securing a younger replacement for the Bulgarian.

Although talks have reached a stalemate with Berbatov, United are confident they can soon tie Hernandez to an improved five-year deal following his brilliant debut campaign.

The club’s hierarchy have been working tirelessly behind the scenes in recent months to protect themselves from predators by extending the contracts of key players.

Hernandez is set to follow in the footsteps of Patrice Evra, Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick and Ryan Giggs, who have all signed new deals in recent months. Paul Scholes has still not decided whether to accept the club’s offer of a one-year contract extension.

Ferguson to hand wonderkid, Moririson a new contract pay hike.

Manchester United are ready to hand starlet Ravel Morrison a new contract.
The People says Morrison is being rewarded for his progress with a new deal.
Sir Alex believes that the striker has a huge future ahead of him and has moved to tie him to the club for three more years.
Morrison could even feature in the first team this season if the title is wrapped up with games to spare.
He has been instrumental in United’s match to the FA Youth Cup final.

Ferguson joins battle for Blackburn defender Jones

Sir Alex Ferguson is interested in Blackburn Rovers defender Phil Jones.
The Sun says Fergie will battle Liverpool rival Kenny Dalglish for the England prospect.
Manchester United's interest is long established- they made enquiries last summer, with a view to a definite move in the close season.
Boss Fergie will have money to spend and sees Jones as the ideal long-term partner for Chris Smalling, 21.
The pair have impressed in the heart of the defence for England's Under-21s while Jones can also play as a holding midfielder.

Rooney: I'm so sorry I said we weren't good enough

Wayne Rooney has confessed he could not have been more wrong to question the quality of Sir Alex Ferguson's squad with Manchester United now on course for a European and domestic Double.

The Barclays Premier League leaders have one foot in the Champions League final at Wembley after a resounding 2-0 win over Schalke in Germany.

But only six months ago Rooney almost quit Old Trafford. He refused to sign a new contract and claimed the club were no longer good enough to satisfy his ambitions.

The England striker, who capped a magnificent performance with United's second goal on Tuesday night in Gelsenkirchen, said: 'When I look at it now, how wrong was I!
'Obviously I made a mistake. I admitted that and apologised, and I've wanted to prove myself again to the United fans. I feel I'm doing that now. I'm 100 per cent committed to this club.

'It's been a lot different in the second half of the season. I'm a lot happier in my life and happier with the way I'm playing. It's been like settling down again.

'I'm very grateful to the fans for supporting me through it and I'm delighted with my form. Now it would be a great end to the season with a Champions League final and to win the Premier League.'

Man Utd keeping tabs on Genk keeper Thibault Courtois

Manchester United are eyeing Racing Genk goalkeeper Thibault Courtois.
Belgian sources say United have been scouting the 18 year-old shot-stopper and are weighing up making a concrete move for the youngster.
Despite his tender years, Courtois has been a first teamer at Genk since 2009.
Sir Alex is facing a major overhaul of his keeper stocks this summer.

Evra wants to follow Giggs in Yoga class!

Patrice Evra hailed the performance of Ryan Giggs after victory at Schalke.
Speaking in the aftermath of United’s win, Evra told French broadcasters the reason behind the Welshman’s fine form:
"Giggs? He must stop talking about his yoga!
"He says it makes him run faster. I will have to sign up immediately!
"He is 37 years old and he runs more than almost everyone else on the pitch, and he is decisive. What can I say?!!"

Peter Schmeichel sees Neuer as next goalkeeper for United!

Former Man Utd star Peter Schmeichel has heaped praise on FC Schalke goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.
The Danish great feels that German number one Neuer, who performed impressively for Schalke in last night’s Champions League loss to United, would be the perfect replacement for retiring Dutchman Edwin van der Sar.
“He (Neuer) is probably the best goalkeeper in the world," Schmeichel said on Sky Sports News.
"He is 25 years of age. He's been captain for that team for a number of years. He is very mature in the way he plays.
"He doesn't make mistakes - I haven't seen him make a single mistake - and the way he played yesterday, he wasn't lucky in the way that he saved the shots and one-on-ones, it was very calculated.
"I just thought his overall game was fantastic and absolutely well-suited for Man Utd."
And Schmeichel added that Neuer’s trip to Old Trafford next week may convince him to choose the English giants when he leaves the Veltins-Arena in the summer.
"Maybe he (Neuer) will have another think," the Dane added. "He's seen what Man Utd are capable of first hand,” he added.
"He's going to Old Trafford on Tuesday and it's just such a special place to play.
"He will probably experience, if nothing happens within that week, an Old Trafford crowd that absolutely welcomes him and sees him as the next goalkeeper for United."

Schalke open door for Man Utd to outbid Bayern Munich for Neuer

Schalke have opened the door to Man Utd trumping Bayern Munich for Manuel Neuer.
Sir Alex was amazed by Neuer's performance last night, but seemed resigned to seeing the Germany No1 moving to Bayern.
But Schalke have other ideas and are ready to sell to the highest bidder.
Schalke sporting director Horst Heldt said of Neuer after the defeat to United: "His value on the transfer market is already very high, I don't know if it can still go up.
"But watching this match, I said to myself, 'Why sell such a player?'."
Bayern chief Uli Hoeness warned: "We want Manuel, and where there's a will there's a way.
"But Schalke cannot now demand an astronomical price."

Man Utd approach Inter Milan to open Julio Cesar negotiations

Manchester United have approached Inter Milan for goalkeeper Julio Cesar.
Tuttosport says United have asked Inter about opening negotiations over the Brazilian's sale. For the moment, Inter have told United they need more time to consider their options.
Inter are reluctant to part with Julio Cesar, but the keeper is unsettled and excited by the interest of United.
The Serie A champs are expected to listen to United's offer only after they have a deal in place for Bologna keeper Emiliano Viviano, who would arrive as a direct replacement for Julio Cesar.

Mourinho assigning super agent, Mendes to land Man Utd star Nani

Real Madrid are being linked with winger Nani.
Gazzetta dello Sport says Real boss Mourinho has his eye on the Portuguese wide man and will ask super agent Jorge Mendes - who also represents Mourinho and Cristiano Ronaldo - to push through the deal.
Mendes has done many deals with Portuguese-based players and United, having overseen the deals that first brought Ronaldo, Nani and Anderson to Old Trafford.
He also engineered Ronaldo's record £80m switch to Real from Manchester United in 2009 and Mourinho is now hoping he can capture Nani for him.

Ferguson watching Mascherano Barcelona situation closely

Sir Alex Ferguson is monitoring Javier Mascherano's situation at Barcelona.
The midfielder only moved to the Nou Camp last summer, but is being linked with a move away after failing to nail down a regular first team start.
Argentina captain Mascherano has been linked with Juventus.
However, Catalan media sources say United are also watching developments closely.
Ferguson has been a big fan of Mascherano since his days at Corinthians.

Inter Milan brings in agent to broker Man Utd deal for Park

Inter Milan are interested in midfielder Park Ji-sung.
The South Korea international has just over a year left on his current United deal and Inter president Massimo Moratti wants to bring him to Serie A for a career swansong.
Calciomercato.com says Moratti will employ agent Federico Pastorello to negotiate with United for Park, who would help lift the club's profile across East Asia if he was to move to the San Siro.
Only this week, Sir Alex admitted he regarded Park as a first-choice on the team sheet for any high pressure game such is the status he now enjoys inside Old Trafford.

Match Analysis: Schalke 0-2 Manchester United: Schalke torn apart by United’s passing and movement

Manchester United were superior throughout the 90 minutes and could have won by a much greater margin.
Ralf Rangnick was without Benedikt Höwedes at the back, which meant Joel Matip had to play at centre-back. Other than that, it was the expected team in the expected formation.

Sir Alex Ferguson omitted Nani to play Antonio Valencia on the right, and played Fabio behind him. The side was the same as the XI that started against Chelsea, with the exception of one Brazilian twin in for the other.
Manchester United dominated the game from start to finish – better at the back, always in charge in midfield, and creative in the final third. The only poor aspect of their performance was their finishing – though credit is due to Manuel Neuer for a fine first half performance. He was only holding back the tide, however, and United’s goals duly arrived midway through the second period.

With little change in the pattern of play throughout the game (with the slight exception of when Rangnick replaced Alexander Baumjohann with Peer Kluge towards the beginning of the second half and Schalke briefly competed in midfield) there’s no real reason to review the game chronologically. Instead, here’s a look at what Schalke did badly, and what United did well.

Schalke errors

(a) Not compact enough

This was Schalke’s biggest problem. The concept of being ‘compact’ from back to front is widely established in top-level modern football. It doesn’t matter whether a team presses high up the pitch or uses a deep defensive line – the gap from the defence to attack shouldn’t be stretched. Arrigo Sacchi famously wanted a distance of no more than 25 metres in this respect, and Rafael Benitez – a self-confessed Sacchi disciple – is another who encourages his sides to be compact.

This idea seemed to completely escape Schalke in this match, however, as Kyriakos Papadopoulos would often become stranded in front of his own defence, with a huge distance between Schalke’s back five and the rest of the side. The three attacking midfielders tended to jog back, meaning United found gaps between the lines and were able to play.

(b) Allowing Carrick to play

Michael Carrick is a player who divides opinion, but it’s widely established that there’s a huge difference in his performance level when he’s left free, and when he’s closed down in possession. Carrick has a good passing range but needs time and space to pick his passes, and Schalke stood off him, allowing him (and Giggs) to dictate play in the midfield zone.

In previous games Raul had been very good at dropping onto the opposition holding midfielder and preventing them from passing, but Carrick moved slightly higher up the pitch into a position Raul didn’t want to drop into. He completed more passes than any other player, and also covered the furthest distance.

(c) Using only one holder

This was a good advert for the use of a ‘double pivot’ in midfield. Jurado was slack in his defensive duties – he didn’t drop in alongside Papadopoulos quickly enough (and nor did he press higher up the pitch). This meant that Wayne Rooney could move from side to side and drag Papadopoulos around the pitch, opening up space for midfield runners.

(d) Not patient enough in possession
Against Inter, Schalke could play the ball out wide to their full-backs, who were in space and could bring the ball forward. Here, they didn’t have the luxury of ‘free’ players, and so had to try to move up the pitch as a unit. Their passing meant that this wasn’t possible, though – they played forward passes too quickly and couldn’t retain the ball up top.

What Manchester United did well

(a) Pinning back the Schalke full-backs

It’s the usual Manchester United strategy in Europe, but Park and Valencia had excellent games defensively. Atsuto Uchida and Hans Sarpei tried to get forward to stretch the play and provide width, but were rarely in the game and Schalke had to try play forward passes, which were frequently unsuccessful.

(b) Exploiting space between the lines

Schalke were bad in this respect, but United still had to take advantage. Rooney’s movement dragged his marker around and this opened up space in front of the defence for Giggs and Park Ji-Sung to run into. Park spent much of the game coming inside, similar to his movement at the start of the season, whilst Giggs’ bursts forward were reserved but well-timed – particularly in the case of his goal, but he also had other goalscoring chances.

(c) Getting behind the ball quickly

A basic tenet of their game, but United’s (new?) 4-4-1-1 shape was particularly obvious here. The defence sat quite deep, Carrick and Giggs occupied space rather than individual players in front, and the wide players tracked the full-backs. With Rooney dropping in to pressure Schalke in the middle of the pitch, United were disciplined in the rare spells Schalke held onto the ball.

(d) Intelligent passing from midfield

Again, Schalke helped United hugely by standing off, but United used the ball intelligently. Carrick was clearly the main man – his passing was reliable, but also varied. He played short sideways passes, incisive forward balls, and long diagonals out to the flanks. Rooney was also impressive with his passing – he moved away from Papadopoulos to get time on the ball, and then moved play from flank to flank.

Conclusion

Schalke terrible or United fantastic? With such a one-sided performance it’s often hard to tell, but if we’re focusing on tactics – which, of course, we are – it has to be marked down as Schalke being woeful. It’s rare to see a top-level side leaving such huge space between the lines, even rarer to see such little defensive effort from half the outfield players. Losing 0-2 flattered Schalke.

That might seem harsh on United – and the obvious question would be, “If Schalke are so bad, how come Valencia and Inter didn’t carve them apart?” To which the answer is, “They did.” Inter scored two goals in the first leg as well (the Italians were just desperately awful at the back and managed to concede five goals), whilst Valencia created constant opportunities and managed to waste them – much like United did in the first half here. As Unai Emery said after that game, “We had four chances and we don’t take any. We’ve been knocked out unjustly, we’ve missed an opportunity with everything in our favour. It was a game where we had more chances and we lost.” It’s a long way back for Schalke.

Wayne Rooney and Park Ji-Sung, the key to Man Utd Champions League success against Schalke

ANALYSIS
By
Nick Price

The Germans shocked Europe by putting seven past holders Inter in the previous round, but reproducing the tactical masterclass that disposed of Chelsea is vital for Ferguson's men

Let Wayne Rooney hurt from deep

Manchester United's progress against Chelsea in the quarter-finals owed much to the deployment of Wayne Rooney off the front line, with Javier Hernandez playing on the shoulder of the last defender.

It was an awesome combination, playing to Hernandez's ability to create separation from his marker as well as forcing defenders to sit deeper to counteract his speed. Leave too much room at the back and you'll be chasing Chicharito eventually - and you won't catch him.

Even more importantly, it allowed Rooney to drop towards a five-man midfield and give them an "out" ball, pick up possession and release wingers down the flanks, and time late runs into the box that defensive midfielders must be alert to. Witness his winner in the first leg at Stamford Bridge for just how effectively this works.

Rooney has not fared too well in United's last two matches, but given the freedom to roam, the England man could inflict lasting damage on Schalke.

Start Park Ji-Sung

The big name for the big games is coolness personified. The South Korean midfielder always shows up when it matters most, as evidenced by his superbly timed strike against Chelsea in the last round that sealed a 2-1 win at Old Trafford and a 3-1 aggregate success.

Of course, it's not just Park Ji-Sung's steely nerves that make him so dependable for Sir Alex Ferguson, it is his relentless running and complete selflessness for the cause, not to mention his versatility – he is a manger's dream.

The indefatigable midfielder could line up down the left for United to negate the forward thrust of the stupendously attack-minded right-back Atsuto Uchida and to keep the electric Jefferson Farfan in check, leaving Nani or Antonio Valencia to push up against either the rawness of Danilo Avelar or the stodgy Hans Sarpei on the opposite flank.

Or he could play centrally should Ralf Rangnick decide to deploy Jose Manuel Jurado in the middle, which might see United use the five-man midfield that worked to such devastating effect in the first leg against Chelsea.

Invite pressure and pounce on the counter

Schalke showed in the previous round that they will play without fear against the big teams. Their five goals at San Siro were not due to luck alone, while the win in the return leg at the Veltins-Arena was entirely deserved after another dominant attacking display.

Expect the German hosts to be similarly forward thinking against their English opponents on Tuesday as they seek to make the most of their early advantage to leave the Premier League leaders chasing a big figure in the second leg, but United can turn that urgency to their advantage by laying down a trap to launch their trademark counters.

Just as they did to Arsenal in the 2009 semi-finals, Ferguson's men can target the areas vacated by a marauding midfield and punch holes through the exposed flanks left open by Schalke's attacking full-backs.

Bully Raul

The veteran Spanish striker has dumbfounded the critics who said he was past it with an outstanding campaign for the German club, arguably proving to be the signing of the season since his Bosman move from Real Madrid.

At 33 he may have lost some of his pace but his game was never really about speed of foot, it was always about speed of mind and a soft as silk touch, and he has continued to get goals into the twilight years of his career – earning the respect of many who thought he could only turn it on when supported by a cast of superstars.

But in Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, United have just the weapons to ensure that the three-time Champions League winner does not improve upon his goals record in the competition having usurped Filippo Inzaghi with his strikes against Inter.

Getting tight to the legendary forward, perhaps hitting him with a few tough but fair early challenges or deploying more underhanded tactics, and keeping a close watch on his every movement would be advised.

Keep up with Farfan and Jurado

It's not just Raul that Ferguson's men have to worry about as the Germans maintain remarkable levels of fitness, noted by Lyon chairman Jean Michel Aulas after the two sides met in the group stages, with the Frenchman left bewildered by the Bundesliga side's ability to run his team into the ground.

Whether or not they still are as fit as that remains to be seen, but in Jefferson Farfan and Jurado, Schalke have two top class, energetic and quick-witted wide men, although the Spaniard was deployed in a holding role to good effect against Inter and may yet play through the middle once more given his tendency to drift towards the centre.

Again, Park's inclusion will be vital to negate those two, and whoever lines up on the right flank – likely Antonio Valencia rather than Nani, given the Ecuadorian's greater ability to cover the length of the pitch – will have to be mindful of their direct opponent. Allow them too much time on the ball or plenty of space to run into and they can drag defenders out of shape and create chances.
