Man Utd see Benfica star Nicolas Gaitan as Sneijder alternative

Sir Alex Ferguson remains keen on Benfica star Nicolas Gaitan, despite the youngster signing a new deal this week.

The Telegraph says United have made Benfica midfielder Gaitán a target for the January transfer window, but will have to meet a £40 million release clause to sign him.

United remain in the market for an attacking midfielder after failing in summer attempts to sign Inter Milan’s Wesley Sneijder and Samir Nasri, who rejected United in favour of a move from Arsenal to Manchester City.

Although Gaitán has largely been deployed as a left-sided winger by Benfica in recent months, the former Boca Juniors player has regularly played in an advanced role behind midfield and attack, a position United have yet to fill following Paul Scholes’s retirement at the end of last season.

How Manchester United have secured their future by agreeing 13 contract renewals in 12 months

Manchester United announced on Monday that Javier Hernandez has signed a new five-year contract to 2016 as a reward for his stunning form since his £7 million move from Chivas Guadalajara in the summer of 2010.

The Mexican became the 13th player in the last year to renew their contract at Old Trafford as Sir Alex Ferguson looks to build a title-winning side based on a mix of youth and experience.

United spent more than £50 million in the transfer market over the summer but that has not stopped them from making sure to look after the players already in the squad.

Here, the runs through the A to Z of the 13 players who have committed their futures to the club in the last 12 months...

Anderson
Age: 23
Position: Midfield
Length of contract: Until 2015
Weekly wages: £60,000

Why United did it: Returned from long-term injury last season to have his best spell since 2008 and became a regular starter.
How he has performed since: Key part of title-winning squad because of his energy and drive, but still questions over his ability against the best sides.

Michael Carrick
Age: 30
Position: Midfield
Length of contract:  Until 2014
Weekly wages: £75,000

Why United did it: Contract was due to expire in 2012 and the club wanted to protect his value.
How he has performed since: Has found himself in and out of the side due to patchy form since an impressive first two seasons at Old Trafford after signing in 2006.

Tom Cleverley
Age: 22
Position: Midfield
Length of contract: Until 2015
Weekly wages: £30,000

Why United did it: The youngster started the season in outstanding form in central midfield, forcing his way in the side.
How he has performed since: Foot injury sustained in September means he is yet to play since signing a new deal but he is now back in full training and due for a return to action.

Patrice Evra
Age: 30
Position: Defence
Length of contract: Until 2014
Weekly wages: £90,000

Why United did it: The left-back had less than 18 months left on his existing deal and United were desperate to keep him as he flirted with Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona.
How he has performed since: Evra has been below-par for the last year and has been badly exposed at time, not least in Sunday's Manchester derby.

Darren Fletcher
Age: 27
Position: Midfield
Length of contract: Until 2015
Weekly wages: £80,000

Why United did it: Pay rise and contract extension to recognise him importance to the side.
How he has performed since: Laid low by a mystery virus for months but has returned to action and started United's last two league games.

Ryan Giggs
Age: 37
Position: Midfield
Length of contract: Until 2012
Weekly wages: £80,000

Why United did it: Player and club both felt he had more to contribute and should hold off retirement for at least one more season.
How he has performed since: Played a key role in a number of games at the back-end of last season, not least in both legs of the Champions League quarter-final win over Chelsea. Used sparingly so far this term.

Joshua King
Age: 19
Position: Striker
Length of contract: Until 2013
Weekly wages: £8,000

Why United did it: To tie the youngster down amid interest from abroad.
How he has performed since: Currently on loan at German side Borussia Monchengladback but has made just two appearances.

Park Ji-Sung
Age: 30
Position: Midfield
Length of contract: Until 2013
Weekly wages: £50,000

Why United did it: The South Korean midfielder was about to enter the final season of his existing contract, which was due to expire in 2012.
How he has performed since: Spent most of the season so far on the bench but has always been trusted by Ferguson in the big games later in the campaign.

Javier Hernandez
Age: 23
Position: Striker
Length of contract: Until 2016
Weekly wages: £90,000

Why United did it: The Mexican was rewarded for his outstanding form in his first season at Old Trafford, which attracted the attention of Real Madrid.
How he has performed since: Likely to make first appearance since the announcement of his new deal at Everton this weekend.

Wayne Rooney
Age: 26
Position: Striker
Length of contract: Until 2015
Weekly wages: £220,000

Why United did it: The striker controversially declared his desire to leave United but two days later performed a famous U-turn by agreeing a new deal.
How he has performed since: United's star man was off-colour for much of last season but was excellent in the final two months of the campaign and already has nine goals to his name this term.

Chris Smalling
Age: 21
Position: Defender
Length of contract: Until 2016
Weekly wages: £40,000

Why United did it: The £10m signing produced some hugely impressive displays in his first season at the club.
How he has performed since: A key component of the United squad, although lately he has featured more at right-back than his preferred central defensive position.

Antonio Valencia
Age: 26
Position: Midfield
Length of contract:  Until 2015
Weekly wages: £80,000

Why United did it: The winger was in fine form last season after returning from a serious ankle injury and was attracting interest from big clubs in Europe.
How he has performed since: Has found himself behind Nani and Young in the pecking order so far this season.

Nemanja Vidic
Age: 30
Position: Defender
Length of contract: Until 2014
Weekly wages: £90,000

Why United did it: The United captain had suggested he may look to move abroad but the club were desperate to hold on to their main central defender.
How he has performed since: Imperious last season as he drove United to a 19th league title. Has struggled with injury problems so far this season.

Welbeck, the only born-and-bred local in the biggest Manchester derby for nearly 40 years

The rising star of English football was just five years old when he begged an older boy who lived over the road to let him play in the games of street football that regularly took place outside their homes.

Danny Welbeck has not forgotten the part Wes Brown, then a 16-year-old Manchester United trainee, played in his football education. And Brown has not forgotten the instant impression the younger boy made.

'We didn't encourage it at first - we thought Danny could get hurt,' recalls Brown, who knew the rough nature of even the friendliest kickabout in inner-city Manchester.

'But the concern didn't last long, to be honest. Once Danny got started, you could see he was decent. He had the skills and he could look after himself.'

On Sunday, those skills learned on the streets will see Welbeck step out at Old Trafford as the only born-and-bred local in the biggest Manchester derby for nearly 40 years - and no player among the 21 different nationalities on show will be treated with greater affection by United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who has finally achieved his long-time ambition of discovering a great Mancunian striker for United.

Such was Ferguson's belief in Welbeck that he kept faith in the striker even when growth spurts left him weak, gangly and injury-prone. Five goals this season and a likely place in England's Euro 2012 squad show Ferguson's long-term instincts were right, particularly as the 6ft 3in hit man was picked ahead of Wayne Rooney for last weekend's game against Liverpool at Anfield.

'Welbeck always had great ability, but he made slow progress until he went to Sunderland on loan last season. That is when he grew up, became a man,' said Ferguson.

'He had knee problems growing up but we were always willing to wait for him. He's different, rangy and long-legged. Once he gets going, he gallops quickly. He has a great future.'

It is a sentiment echoed in FA quarters, too. 'United deserve great credit. They are one of the best clubs at sticking with players like Danny when they're still physically maturing,' says head of elite development Gareth Southgate. 'And they have coupled that original patience with in-house training and successful loan periods to get to the point they are now.'

It all started for Welbeck at Markfield Avenue, a narrow, winding road of terraces and semis in the Manchester inner-city district of Longsight, an area most drive past in a hurry as they take the A6 south from the city centre towards Stockport. Its only remarkable feature is the ability to produce footballers.

At No 42, with a United-red front door, lived the Browns. Wes, now at Sunderland, played for England as a teenager and won the Champions League with United. Youngest brother Reece is currently on United's books while another sibling, Clive, still lives on the road and plays non- League football for New Mills.

On the opposite side of the street (until their house was demolished to make way for a new playground area) were the Welbecks. Victor and Elizabeth had emigrated from Ghana and passed down Christian values to their three sons, Wayne (who plays for non- League Flixton), Christopher and football-daft Danny.

'It was always the Browns and the Welbecks playing football in the streets. Wes joined in when he could,' recalls Clive Brown. 'It was a great set-up. We had two walls either side of the road as goals, and the ball hitting the kerb helped develop your control. Danny loved it all, even though he was the youngest; all he wanted to be was a striker.'

Welbeck had started training with United at the age of eight. By 12, he had moved to Trinity High secondary school but with a football career mapped out in his head, there was no danger of him going off the rails in his teenage years. Head teacher David Ainsworth said: 'Danny was a quiet, polite boy. I never remember him getting into any type of trouble.

'He got 12 GCSEs and if he'd wanted to push himself academically, he would have been university material.

'He was modest about his football, too. I remember one lady PE teacher coming to me spitting feathers on one occasion, complaining that Danny was refusing to sprint 200metres in a Games lesson.

'I asked Danny why he'd refused and he said he was playing Arsenal in the FA Youth Cup semi-final that night. He just hadn't like to talk about it in front of the class. 'A few of us went to watch him at Old Trafford for the game and he scored the winning goal. He came into school the next day as usual and never mentioned it. I said something in assembly just so he'd get a round of applause because we were proud of him.

'He wouldn't milk it at all. I once went over with a ball and asked him to show me a few tricks, but he just shook his head very politely.'

By the end of his time at Trinity, Welbeck would occasionally be away to play in overseas tournaments with United and England. But he still turned out for the school team when he could.
Coach Darren Westmoreland recalls a cup game against Manchester Academy. 'They equalised with two minutes to go and, from kick-off, Danny went up the other end and scored the winner within 20 seconds.

'His attitude was great. He was used to working with the top coaches at Manchester United but if I asked him to play a certain way for the good of our team, he'd listen and do it.

'We keep in touch. I recently asked him to sign a shirt for a friend of mine - he came into school to return it personally. When I looked at it, he'd got the whole United squad to sign it.'

For all Welbeck's skill, his progress between 14 and 18 was hampered by growth spurts that left him 'weak and gangly', according to Ferguson, and caused him injury problems.

He was just 14 when he made his England Under-16 debut, in a 4-0 win over a Wales team that included Aaron Ramsey. Manager Kenny Swain recalls: 'Danny wasn't easy on the eye, he was un-coordinated in his running style, but you could see he had great potential for the future.

'The only way I could describe it is that he seemed at one with the ball. He had this way of rolling his foot over it with his front two studs, it was something you'd see a Spanish player do, not an English one.

'After six or seven minutes of his debut, I just thought to myself, "Bloody hell, he'll do for me". Later, he went to the Under-17 World Cup and he and Victor Moses were the most potent strikeforce in the competition.'

At United, Welbeck made his debut at 17 but got fewer headlines than another teen sensation, Federico Macheda, who scored a goal against Aston Villa that famously helped United win the title.

Behind the scenes, however, Ferguson always expected Welbeck to emerge as the main man.
Successful loan spells at Preston and Sunderland have built confidence and this season he has established himself at Old Trafford. He was picked ahead of Wayne Rooney at Liverpool last weekend and most expect him to replace him again for the group games at Euro 2012.

The last word has to go to Brown, the neighbour who has known Welbeck all his life and also made the journey from Markfield Avenue to Manchester United, three miles in distance but a different planet in other respects.

'Danny has the size, the power and the strength. He has the skill and the technical ability. He has the willingness to learn. He has it all, actually,' says Brown.

Not the best news for City. Welcome to Manchester, Mr Mancini.

'I am the reason why Manchester United have won all those trophies' - Former striker Dion Dublin insists broken leg paved way for Red Devils' future success

Former Manchester United striker Dion Dublin has suggested that the serious injury he sustained in one of his first appearances for the club was the start of Sir Alex Ferguson's trophy-laden reign.

The Glaswegian is approaching his 25th year in charge of the Manchester club and Dublin admits that his broken leg enabled the Red Devils to acquire Eric Cantona.

He jokingly told ESPN Classic: "It was my Old Trafford debut and it lasted about 60 minutes and my left leg and left ankle sort of gave way on me from a tackle from behind.
"I am the reason why Man United have won all those trophies - its down to me, it really is. I break my leg and then they bring in this has-been called Cantona who just takes the world of football by storm!

"As soon as he came in it just took off. Players warmed to him. Eric is bigger than me: 6ft 3in or 6ft 4in - he had a touch of a genius, he could head it, he could tackle, left and right foot, the guy was an absolute genius. And I think that’s what Man United needed."

Dublin also revealed Sir Alex's half-time team-talks are highly motivational, despite the Scot having a reputation for dishing out 'the hairdryer treatment' at a poor performance.

He continued: "Some people need the hairdryer.

"I had it and I don’t even know where I was. The only thing I remember about it was we were playing against a team in red and white stripes and I had a stinking first half, missed a load of chances and he was right there at half-time, told me what he thought. I went out and scored a goal in the second half.

"I respect the man for knowing what kind of character I was to get the best out of me."

But the striker turned serious when talking about the Scot's man-management style, and Dublin believes the former Aberdeen boss knows exactly how to handle different personalities in the dressing room.

He added: "What he does he looks after people like Cantona, people like Ronaldo. They’re personalities that you can’t just treat the same as you would treat me or you would treat Lee Sharpe or Gary Pallister. Because they’re all different characters so some people need an arm round them, some people need the hairdryer.

"You know if you do that to Eric he would have just left. Do it to Ronaldo then he’d have just left. So you’ve got to know how to do that and Sir Alex is the best at it."

Tomasz Kuszczak set for Manchester United exit

Tomasz Kuszczak is set for a cut-price departure from Manchester United in the January transfer window.
The keeper has no future at Old Trafford and is now fourth choice behind David de Gea, Anders Lindegaard and Ben Amos.

West Ham passed up the chance to sign Kuszczak on loan last month and opted for Arsenal outcast Manuel Almunia.

Kuszczak's former club West Brom were keen on a move in the summer but failed to agree a fee with United after they slapped a £4million price tag on him.

The Poland international stopper, 29, joined United for £2m in July 2007 following a loan spell and has made just 61 appearances in five years at Old Trafford.

He has not played since the Red Devils' 1-1 draw at Blackburn on May 14.

No one was willing to pay United's asking price in the summer but United are now ready to accept a lower sum in the New Year.

Roma hope to negotiate free transfer for Ferdinand

AS Roma are ready to make a serious move for Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand.

Sportmediaset says Ferdinand's relationship with new Roma director general Franco Baldini, who remains England team manager, will be key to convincing the 32 year-old about moving to Italy.

Now 32, Roma hope to sign Ferdinand on a free transfer and see him as a major leader of their new locker room.

Indeed, Roma coach Luis Enrique would like to replace veteran Juan with Ferdinand, who would be called upon to help bring on young Dane Simon Kjaer in a new-look central defensive partnership.

Krasic honoured by Man Utd interest

Juventus winger Milos Krasic admits he is flattered to be linked with the likes of Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund.

The 26-year old Serbia international knows very well that transfer rumours always involved plenty of speculation but nonetheless he is humbled that United and Dortmund have reported interest in him.

"All the transfer rumours are just nonsense and I don't want to waste any time on that," he told Sport.

"Both mentioned clubs, Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund are big clubs and bring great honour, but neither I, nor my manager, are aware of anything of it.

"But, even if there is some truth in it, that wouldn't change a thing, as all my plans are connected to Juventus. "

Man Utd rival Man City for Napoli star Lavezzi

Manchester United have joined the interest for Napoli star Ezequiel Lavezzi.

Gazzetta dello Sport says United had scouts in the stands to see Lavezzi score in victory over Udinese this week.

The Argentina international can add the 'fantasy' United badly missed in Sunday's humiliation against Manchester City.

For their part, City are also keen on Lavezzi, which has been confirmed by manager Roberto Mancini and his scout Faustino Salsano in recent weeks.

Ferguson posts Man Utd scouts to watch Udinese's Mehdi Benatia

Manchester United are interested in Udinese defender Mehdi Benatia.

The talented Frenchman can play at centre-half and as a defensive midfielder. Gazzetta dello Sport says Benatia was watched by United scouts in action against Napoli this week.

Benatia attracted tentative enquiries from Arsenal at the end of last season.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is now eyeing Benatia to add some steel to his midfield.

Gladstony forced to delay FC Twente move

Gladstony's move to FC Twente has been delayed until the New Year.

Gladstony has been signed by United from their Brazilian satellite club Desportivo Brasil, but can't immediately move to Old Trafford due to work permit problems.

The midfielder was due to join Twente on-loan, but this has been delayed due to injury problems.

A decision over his arrival is now expected in the New Year.

Scholes makes scouting check on Huddersfield striker Rhodes

Huddersfield Town striker Jordan Rhodes is a shock target for Manchester United.

The Daily Mail says Paul Scholes' first job as Manchester United scout has been to study the progress of Rhodes as the Premier League champions step up their interest in the striker.

The free-scoring 21-year-old has scored nine goals in his last four games for the Terriers, the last of those coming against Scunthorpe United on Wednesday, a match watched by Scholes at the Galpharm Stadium.

Rhodes, who also scored a hat-trick for Scotland Under 21s earlier this month, is wanted by a host of top clubs. Huddersfield, though, have no interest in selling for less than £5million.

The powerfully-built striker, who is from the same Greater Manchester area of Oldham as Scholes, is the son of former Barnsley and Oldham Athletic player and current Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeping coach Andy Rhodes.

Ferguson: Fantastic fringe players proved their quality

Sir Alex Ferguson was happy with his squad players after their Carling Cup win at Aldershot.

Tom Cleverley made his comeback from injury and captain Nemanja Vidic also returned, while several of Ferguson's fringe men put their hands up for a starting spot in Saturday's Barclays Premier League game at Everton.

He said: "They'll always give me nudges. It's difficult picking a team when you've got so many good players.

"We have a fantastic squad. That's why I had to play these players tonight. They need the games, they've not had many first-team games to be honest with you because the consistency of the team has been very good - we've not needed to make any changes.

"But there's Michael Owen - every time he plays, he scores. It's a fantastic record he's got.

"He's a fantastic professional. Dimitar Berbatov had a fantastic game tonight and scored a tremendous goal from great football.

"So they've all done well, Valencia, Thomas Cleverley back is a good thing for us because the boy's an outstanding footballer.

"Vida's got another 90 behind him. I think he needed it. Until he got his breathing going, he was feeling it."

Ferguson ready to axe Ferdinand, Evra after derby humiliation

Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to swing the axe on Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra.

The Mirror says Ferguson will undergo a radical review of his defence in the aftermath of the derby debacle, with question marks over even players as established as Ferdinand and Evra.

Although Fergie is not prone to knee-jerk reactions and impulsive decisions, he is known to harbour major concerns about his defence, which has looked vulnerable for the past few weeks.

Ferdinand and Evra could pay the price for Sunday's derby nightmare, with Fabio Da Silva coming in at left-back against Everton and Chris Smalling partnering Vidic in central defence, with Phil Jones at right-back.

Owen: We went into Cup win under pressure, Man Utd reputation had to be protected

Michael Owen was delighted to be on the scoresheet in their Carling Cup win at Aldershot.

Owen was back in the starting line-up for the match.

He scored his third goal in two League Cup ties this season and said: "We were a little bit under pressure with the result at the weekend.

"Although no-one here started at the weekend, you still have Manchester United's reputation to look after.

"So whatever side was put out, we wanted to bounce back and thankfully we got the win.

"As you can imagine, the laughs and jokes have quietened down a little bit (since Sunday).

"Sometimes you need a kick in the teeth to get going and it was a big kick in the teeth, as everybody knows, and we were eager to bounce back."

Ferguson revives interest for Athletic Bilbao midfielder Javi Martinez

Sir Alex Ferguson is eyeing Athletic Bilbao midfielder Javi Martinez.

Martinez, a ball-winning midfielder, has been a long-term target for Fergie.

Sources in Spain have now revealed that United and Serie A side Inter Milan are now leading the chase for his signature.

It has been reported that United and Inter reckon they could snare Martinez for around £17m when the transfer window reopens in January.

Keeper Amos happy with cleansheet at Aldershot

Goalkeeper Ben Amos was happy with his cleansheet in their Carling Cup win at Aldershot.

The 21 year-old made one flying save at the very end of the Reds’ 3-0 win at Aldershot Town, to keep out Luke Gutteridge’s piledriver and deny the hosts a consolation goal, but it was otherwise a quiet night for the man wearing the number 40 shirt.

“Obviously it was good to get the save at the end, to show what I can do,” Amos told MUTV, “but I didn't have a lot to do, just distribution and tidying things up. That’s one of the biggest things about being a goalkeeper for Manchester United - you can have nothing to do all game and then, when the one thing you need to do comes along, you've got to do it well and keep it out. That's my job, to keep a clean sheet and I think everyone's happy.”

The game went very much according to plan, said Amos, as United dominated possession and converted three chances inside the first 48 minutes.

“Our aim was to control the game at our tempo like we did at Elland Road [against Leeds in the previous round]. If you give the home team even a bit of encouragement, especially in a tight ground like this, the crowd get behind them and get on your back.

"If you're not switched on, these games can go horribly wrong," Amos added. "Concentration is vital and you need to be ruthless in the box and put your chances away. We wanted to kill them off early doors and we did it with some nice goals.”

Roma board watching veteran Ferdinand

AS Roma are monitoring Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand’s situation.

The 32 year-old's future at United has been questioned this season, with rumours of a lucrative move to the MLS surfacing.

Itasportpress.it says Roma's new board are also keeping tabs on Ferdinand's situation and are prepared to go as high as £12 million to bring the veteran to Italy.

New Roma director general Franco Baldini is close to Ferdinand through his England team manager role and could be a big influence in convincing the centre-half about a Serie A swansong.

Man Utd target Lucas Ocampos tipped for greatness

Manchester United have been told transfer target Lucas Ocampos has the physique to handle the Premier League's physical demands.

Chelsea have been linked with a €17 million bid for the River Plate teen, while United are also being linked with the Buenos Aries press.

"Ocampos is a very interesting player, has a great physique, knows how to play in an old-fashioned winger's role and can score goals. A great talent with potential," former River Plate market consultant, Barend Krausz, told Fcinternews.it.
"Who does he remind me of? It is not easy to say.

"His playing style is reminiscent of Angel Di Maria of Real Madrid."

Owen big fan of Brighton's Mackail-Smith

Michael Owen is impressed by Brighton striker Craig Mackail-Smith.

Owen feels the Scotland international is Premier League class.

He tweeted: "I have seen him a few times Henry and he impresses me every time. He is good enough for the Premier League in my opinion."

Fergie ready to break the bank for Sneijder after derby defeat.

Rattled Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to break the bank to finally land Inter Milan midfielder Wesley Sneijder.

The Daily Star says Fergie was left stunned by United’s capitulation to bitter rivals Manchester City in Sunday’s 6-1 derby defeat at Old Trafford.

He will now push to splash out £40 million to sign Sneijder.

The Holland and Inter Milan ace has been a long-term target of Fergie’s. He spent the whole of last summer trying to sign him but failed to thrash out a deal with the Italian giants.

The Scot was left frustrated as United refused to meet Inter’s asking price while Sneijder was demanding in excess of £200,000 a week.

But Fergie remains a big fan of the midfield schemer and knows he would be the ideal replacement for Paul Scholes, who retired in the summer.

Phelan: We'll find out about a few players now

Mike Phelan says they're picking over the bones of their massacre at the hands of Manchester City.

But he insists United won't dwell on their humiliation.

Phelan told the Manchester Evening News: “It is in the history books now and you have to live with that but you get an opportunity to work again, to look at the issues that caused us problems and deal with it.

“You can’t hide from it. The players will hurt but they have another game to play. Normally we react well to a knock like we got on Sunday.

“We have a new group of players. It is a new unit we have put together. For some of them it is the first real big hit they have taken. We are going to find out now can they handle it. Can they take it on board? Can they learn from the game?

“It wasn’t all bad. From a coaching point of view some of the game was okay but others we lost focus. That could be because it is a new group and everything has been going well. You reflect on that and you see what is in the players’ lockers and the club’s locker and how we move forward. We will. These things have happened before.

“We look at it, analyse it, try not to dwell too much on it and move on. It makes you reflect on what you have got, what you thought you had but you haven’t.

“Sometimes you can get a little bit, not carried away, but everything is good because you are playing well, you are scoring goals and creating things, everyone is patting you on the back then you get a reducer. That is good when it happens. Sometimes a hard lesson learnt is a good lesson to build from.

Man Utd strike Pakistan mobile deal

Manchester United have entered the Pakistan mobile market.

United could take advantage of cricket's slump in popularity to exploit more commercial opportunities in the Asian sub-continent, it has been claimed.

United have added Zong, one of Pakistan's major mobile telephone companies, to their portfolio of "partners" today.

It is the first time they have joined forces with a Pakistan-based organisation, allowing them to offer greater access to their estimated 10million fans in the region.

Rizwan Akhter, Zong's director of advertising and promotions, said: "Ten years ago, the football market was small, the game was dying.

"But over the past few years, things have changed. Every other person, especially in urban areas, is associated with one club or another.

"And the primary reason for the increase in the popularity of football is the demise and turmoil in cricket."

Akhter continued: "Most of the cricket fans are football followers as well. They are sport lovers.

"But now the interest is increasing because there is more opportunity to see these teams, and the major difference in Pakistan compared to most of Europe, is that matches are available free to air.

"Cricket goes in waves, it is either really up or down. Football viewership sustains throughout, and the graph is rising."

As they have done in many other countries, United will supply exclusive club content to mobile users.

Fergie steamed into his derby shockers: You f****** idiots!

Sir Alex Ferguson steamed into his players in the aftermath of their 6-1 humiliation by Manchester City.

The Daily Mail says Ferguson switched his famous ‘hairdryer’ back on as he accused his senior players of failing to use their experience to stop the slide against Premier League leaders Manchester City.

The United manager called his stars ‘f****** idiots’ in a rant that was followed by an instruction that senior players should report for training to pick over what went wrong.

Ferguson was furious that stand-in skipper Patrice Evra and former England captain Rio Ferdinand didn’t do enough to organise the side after they went down to 10 men with the score 1-0 to City.

Guardiola: Derby humiliation won't change Man Utd status

Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola believes Manchester United will recover from their derby humiliation.

Despite United being crushed by Manchester City, Guardiola has no doubt they are still one of the best teams in Europe and will bounce back from this setback.

Guardiola said: "For me Manchester United is one of the best teams in the world and nothing changes that, even losing 6-1 at home to City.

"I could not see the game on television, but I have recorded it and I will watch it at some point."

Vidic confirms Serbia retirement

Nemanja Vidic has confirmed his international retirement with Serbia.

The United captain earned 56 caps for Serbia and scored two goals.

"After a great deal of thought and with a heavy heart, I have decided the time is right for me to retire from international football," Vidic told ManUtd.com.

"I feel, after 10 years of playing for my country, it is the right time for me to stand aside and allow the younger players to come through.

"I would like to thank all the managers, coaches and players I have played alongside.

"I have always been very proud to play for Serbia and would like to wish them well in future tournaments."
