And they will need to accept United's proposed offer this summer as this is the last time they would be able to command a large fee for the 23-year-old.
Chelsea are also keen, but United are to offer a three-year deal to Kagawa to get the transfer done.

"This season has been very poor. When I go home I can't sleep because I feel very bad about our position. We've lost players such as Hatem Ben Arfa and Mamadou Niang.

Trotters boss Owen Coyle has likened Davies to Geordie legend Paul Gascoigne.

Owen stay unlikely at Man Utd

Michael Owen has three games left to rescue his Manchester United career.

The Manchester Evening News says even if Owen does manage to get involved in the games against Manchester City, Swansea and Sunderland between now and the end of the season, he is fighting a losing battle to secure a future at Old Trafford.

Since joining as a free agent from Newcastle in 2009, he has made only 18 starts as injury has curtailed his progress.

Although his finishing prowess remains – with 17 goals in all – it would represent a major gamble for Sir Alex Ferguson to offer him a fresh one-year extension.

The Manchester Evening News says United expect to make Paul Pogba their first major summer signing.

Sir Alex Ferguson believes he has finally fought off competition from Juventus to secure the highly-rated French starlet on a long-term deal.

Pogba is out of contract at the end of the season - sparking a scramble among Europe's biggest clubs for his signature.

Italian giants Juventus looked set to lure him to Serie A until Ferguson stepped in.

The United manager has convinced Pogba and his agent Mino Raiola that the 19-year-old will become a key figure for the Premier League champions.

A contract has been agreed in principal and United hope to announce a four-year deal as early as this week.

Berbatov can be an asset for a top club, insists Fergie

Dimitar Berbatov will leave Manchester United during the summer with a ringing tribute from Sir Alex Ferguson.

The 31-year-old Bulgaria striker, signed from Tottenham for £30million on transfer deadline day nearly four years ago, is unhappy because he cannot be guaranteed a first-team place at Old Trafford.

Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and his former club, Bayer Leverkusen, are ready to fight for his signature, and Sir Alex said: 'Berba is a top, top player who has years left at the highest level.'

Memorable among his four Premier League hat-tricks, the last coming against Wigan on Boxing Day last year, was when he became the first non- Englishman to score five goals in a league match, in the 7-1 defeat of Blackburn in November 2010 - the season he shared the Golden Boot with Carlos Tevez.

But the Bulgarian, since being left out of Sir Alex's squad for last year's European Cup final - which United lost 3-1 to Barcelona - has made only spasmodic first-team appearances, mainly off the bench.

Ferguson has preferred the likes of Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez partnering Wayne Rooney.

'The boss is very reluctant to lose a player of Berbatov's calibre - but he recognises he cannot offer him first-team football every week,' said a United source.

Manchester United weigh up £15m move for Spain left-back Alba

Manchester United are weighing up a £15million swoop for Valencia left-back Jordi Alba.

The Premier League champions are scouting a long-term replacement for Patrice Evra even though there is no suggestion that they could be ready to listen to offers for the Frenchman.

Alba has come to the attention of United since establishing himself in the Valencia team and becoming a full Spain international last September.

Goal.com understands that Sir Alex Ferguson has instructed his scouts to take a closer look at Alba after the initial reports on the 23-year-old earlier this year were said to be extremely encouraging.

Rivals Manchester City are also closely monitoring the defender and their scouts paid particular attention to him during the January window.

However, as revealed by Goal.com earlier this month, it is believed that City’s top left-back target to replace Alexsandar Kolarov is Lille teenager Lucas Digne, who could be available for £7m this summer.

Alba was released by Barcelona aged 16 but he has flourished at Valencia, who are third in Spain’s Primera Liga and who he joined from Catalan club Cornella.

He was called up to the Spain squad for last two Euro 2012 qualifiers against Scotland and Czech Republic last autumn and started the 1-0 friendly defeat to England at Wembley back in November.

Valencia’s well-documented financial problems mean that the Spanish club could be ready to negotiate the sale of one of their prize assets. United sources believe a deal could be agreed for around the £15m mark.

Man Utd attempt to snap up Everton fullback Baines for knockdown fee

Manchester United are lining up a move for Everton fullback Leighton Baines.

The Sunday Mirror says United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is hopeful that a £5m bid will be enough to persuade the Merseyside club to sell.

Ferguson has hinted that Fabio Da Silva will spend next season out on loan and, with Patrice Evra turning 31 next month, the Scot is said to be keen to bring in Baines as an eventual successor.

Sporting in pole position to loan Fabio

Sporting Lisbon are favourites to land Manchester United defender Fabio da Silva on loan next season after a falling-out between the Old Trafford club and Benfica.

United are furious that Benfica are strongly linking them to the Portuguese club's £20million playmaker Nicolas Gaitan when it is believed Sir Alex Ferguson has other midfield targets in mind, Tottenham's Luka Modric and Eden Hazard of Lille.

It has allowed Sporting to take the lead in negotiations to sign 21-year-old Fabio on a season-long loan, even though Benfica have also expressed an interest.

The young Brazil left-back has found his opportunities at Old Trafford restricted by the consistency of Patrice Evra, and Ferguson wants him to have regular first-team football.

Ferguson has loan plans for Will Keane

Sir Alex Ferguson says they'll be loaning out Will Keane next season.

Ferguson: We've agreed deal with Pogba agent

Sir Alex Ferguson admits they're waiting on Paul Pogba to accept terms.

Terms have been agreed with the youngster's agent, now it just requires the 19-year-old to give the green light.

"The boy has great potential and he is at the right club," Ferguson told MUTV.

"He has to make that decision.

"We have agreed a deal with his agent. Now it is just down to the boy."

Man Utd offer new terms to Davide Petrucci

Manchester United are ready to hand Davide Petrucci a new contract.

The Mirror says United are handing young midfielder Petrucci a new three-year contract - to stop the Italian walking out.

Petrucci has been stuck in the reserves and could have left for a small fee in the summer if his current deal had expired, but he has now agreed new terms.

However, he may be loaned next season if he does not make the breakthrough to the first-team squad.

Fiorentina concerned over Man Utd push for Matija Nastasic

Sir Alex Ferguson has registered his interest with Fiorentina for defender Matija Nastasic.

Fiorentina coach Delio Rossi says the young Serb can develop into a better defender than United captain Nemanja Vidic.

Ferguson is well aware of Nastasic's rising star and Calciomercato.com says he made a bid for the youngster in January.

Fiorentina threw out the offer, but know Ferguson won't shelve his interest in centre-half.

Anderson key as Man Utd go for Benfica pair Gaitan and Witsel

Manchester United may cut loose Anderson to do a deal with Benfica for Axel Witsel.

Benfica are ready to agree terms with United over swap involving Nicolas Gaitan after the Premier League giants agreed to include Fabio Da Silva and Anderson in the deal.

Record says Anderson's arrival will help Benfica cover the sale of Witsel, who is interesting United, along with Manchester City and Chelsea.

Anderson and Fabio will move to Benfica on-loan, but the former could join in a permanent deal in exchange for Belgium international Witsel.

Man Utd remain richest club in game

Manchester United remain the game's richest club.

The reigning Premier League champions have topped Forbes magazine's list for an incredible eighth year in a row with their value estimated at an astronomic £1.39billion.

Arsenal are the next highest placed English side in fourth, while Chelsea and Liverpool also make the top 10 in seventh and eighth respectively.

Athletic Bilbao midfielder Oscar de Marcos set to attract Man Utd bid

Athletic Bilbao midfielder Oscar de Marcos is wanted by Manchester United.

The Mirror says the 22-year-old Spaniard impressed Sir Alex Ferguson as the Basque side knocked United of the Europa League last month, and he sees the playmaker as a potential long-term replacement for Paul Scholes.

Ferguson is keen to bolster his options in midfield given the struggles United had before Scholes' return earlier in the season, but they will have to meet the buy-out clause written into De Marcos' contract if they wish to prize him away from the San Mames.

Scout Report: Reasons why big clubs are lining up for this Colombian wonderkid: Luis Muriel

Luis Muriel's is one of the most unusual football stories of the past year. Most promising starlets have been tracked for years and are followed closely at youth level before coming anywhere near first-team football in a European league.  Muriel's dramatic rise is a very different story.

Usually it takes time for promising young players to receive recognition. Most are subject to some media attention as they gradually come through the ranks of one club or another, often appearing for their national youth teams in the meantime.   But until March of this year, Muriel was barely known inside his native Colombia, let alone abroad. Astonishingly, Muriel's rise to prominence took place having played just three senior matches, one at the back end of the 2009 season and two at the start of 2010.  In total, the 19-year-old had played just 135 minutes of professional football before the sudden adulation began.

The striker began his career in the youth ranks of minor side Atletico Junior.  When he left in 2005, Muriel was told that he had not made the grade and it was unlikely that he ever would do as a professional footballer.  However, he joined one of the most successful sides in Colombia, Deportivo Cali and has not looked back since.  In July 2009, he made his debut against Envigado FC, coming off the bench for a brief appearance.

In March 2010, in only the third game of his career, Muriel suddenly rose to fame when he scored an outstanding hat-trick in which he displayed a tremendous array of flair, strength, speed, technique and composure which not only made him a sensation in Colombia, but also caught the eye of some of the biggest clubs in world football. Almost overnight, Muriel was transformed from a completely unknown player to becoming one of the hottest young prospects in world football.

To his credit, Muriel did not crumble under the pressure of instant fame.  He went on to score nine goals in ten Colombian league matches.

In his short playing career in Colombia, Muriel showed his unquestioned enormous potential. He possesses great pace and acceleration and his body mass allows him to gain speed in over longer distances. He is also a very agile attacker. Muriel's natural speed and athleticism makes it a difficult task for defenders to keep up with him and as he develops his physique further, Muriel is only likely to become quicker and stronger. Muriel can also boast very good finishing skills and he is capable of finding the net from both inside and outside the box. Given the sudden attention, Muriel has shown no sign of cracking under pressure and impressively takes goalscoring chances with great composure. He also has a nice touch on the ball and is able to dribble past defenders with ease.

Having burst onto the local scene, international attention immediately followed.  Clubs in Spain, Italy and Russia very quickly registered their interest in Colombia's latest football revelation.  The president of Deportivo Cali explained that following his hat-trick, several enquiries were made about Muriel within days.  At the end of last month, Italian club Udinese snapped up Muriel for €1.5million, an amazing fee for a player unknown just five months beforehand.  Udinese is a club well-known for its' careful nurturing of young talent.

There is every reason to believe that under the right guidance, Muriel could develop into a top-class player. In the 2010/11 season he will play for Spanish side Granada , having been loaned by Udinese in order to play regular first-team football in Europe.  He will play in Spain's second division, in the same league in which Barcelona and Real Madrid's young stars are nurtured and learn to adapt to European football.

The young Colombian has some rare skills and seems to have all the natural instincts of a true striker. His speed and technical skills already provide Muriel with a great starting point and if he can develop them over time, expect him to be a real success.  One thing is for sure, Muriel is a definitely a name worth remembering.

Manchester United trail FC Copenhagen's £2m left back Oviedo as back-up for Evra

Manchester United are considering a move for FC Copenhagen left back Bryan Oviedo.

United sent scouts to watch the Costa Rica international on Sunday.

Oviedo, who played in Gary Speed’s memorial match in February and has made 13 appearances for the Danish champions this season, is out of contract next summer and available for around £2million.

United want a left back to cover for Patrice Evra as Brazilian Fabio is expected to be loaned to Benfica next season.

Benfica are also showing interest in United midfielder Anderson who could find himself further down the pecking order as United look to sign two midfielders.

Man Utd will try again as Inter put £40M Sneijder up for sale

Manchester United are reviving their interest in Inter Milan star Wesley Sneijder.

The Daily Star says they will battle it out with Russian giants Anzhi Makhachkala for Sneijder.

The Dutch international looks set to leave Inter Milan in the summer with Anzhi hot on his heels.

The Russian side are the only club able to fund the transfer, with Inter demanding at least £40m.

Sneijder however would be keen on a move to the Premier League, with Manchester United set to make a fresh attempt to sign the midfielder.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson tried to sign the Dutch star last year but failed to strike a deal with the Italian giants. Ferguson has kept close tabs on Sneijder and is keen to make another move for the midfield ace.

An Italian source said: “Inter will sell Sneijder but it will have to be on their terms. They believe he is worth £40m in the current market.

“He is one of the leading players in the world in his position, so he won’t be allowed to leave on the cheap. Now we wait and see what happens in the near future.”Manchester United are reviving their interest in Inter Milan star Wesley Sneijder.

Davide Petrucci open to loan move

Davide Petrucci is open to a loan move next season.

Big things are expected at United from the Italian.

"Obviously I’d like to play for United first and I need to play first-team football. I’ve been injured for three years and need to play games. I am playing games this year but playing for the first team would be the next step. It’s not easy to play for United so if I do get the chance to go on loan to get some experience, hopefully I can come back stronger," Petrucci told manutd.com.

Why Man Utd have joined the battle for Luis Muriel - the new Ronaldo

In Italy, they say Luis Muriel is the best they've seen since Ronaldo. Even Azzurri coach Cesare Prandelli has asked to be introduced to him.

Brought to Italy by Udinese and in his first full season in Europe, Muriel has been a revelation for Serie A strugglers Lecce, drawing comparisons to Real Madrid and Inter Milan legend Ronaldo and attracting the interest of Europe's biggest clubs, including the Nerazzurri, Manchester United and Liverpool.

Before his sacking, Liverpool football chief Damien Comolli registered their interest with Udinese when enquiring about senior players Pablo Armero and Mehdi Benatia. United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, meanwhile, had been tipped off about the Colombian by his Italian scout David Williams and had brother Martin make a personal check last month.

The emergence of Muriel is another triumph of Udinese's South American scouting network. After the success of Alexis Sanchez, who was sold to Barcelona for €26 million, Udinese shareholder Jean Paolo Pozzo made it clear on Colombian radio last week how much they rated Muriel: "He's worth one and a half more than Alexis Sanchez."

The 20 year-old was snapped up for just €1.5 million from Deportivo Cali, where he made his debut as an 18 year-old, but had to wait almost a year for his second game. His senior career in Colombia was just ten matches-old, before Udinese swooped.

It's at Lecce, under the guidance of coach Serse Cosmi this season, where Muriel has exploded. There are some who believe it's too soon to judge the Colombian's value after less than 12 months of consistent goal scoring form.

But Cosmi has no doubts: "He's a pure talent, who needs to be improved because sometimes things can stall for a player of his age. But he has great qualities. And he is very similar to Ronaldo."

Muriel feels the pressure of a relegation battle has accelerated his development.

"Being in this situation, fighting relegation every Sunday, forces you to get serious," said Muriel. "There's no chance of relaxing, it's always tense. Playing with this pressure is difficult, but I also hope beneficial for my career.

"It's worked well for me here. I have the confidence of the coach and his staff and this has helped me on the field. I think I'm playing the best football of my career."

And on Cosmi's Ronaldo comments, Muriel smiles: "When I first heard that, it gave me great joy to be compared to Ronaldo, it made me proud.

"But I took it calmly because I know I have not yet achieved anything and there's a long way to go to get close to Ronaldo's level."

AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri is also a fan and has driven club chiefs to make contact with Udinese about a €10 million end of season deal.

"He's powerful, fast and plays like a veteran," gushed Allegri earlier this season. "He's certainly someone we must watch."

Muriel's star is on the rise and only last week, during a visit to the Lecce training ground, Italy coach Cesare Prandelli asked to be introduced to the youngster.

"I've come to see for myself," smiled Prandelli. "We can read the words of Cosmi and they carry weight. You can make a judgement from his comments.

"Potentially, this young man is an extraordinary player."

Though they stand to make a stunning profit from any summer sale, Udinese's owners, the Pozzo family, are agonising over whether to hold onto their young star for at least one season. Interest in Udine is reaching unprecedented proportions and potential season ticket records have the Pozzos seriously considering locking down Muriel for at least 12 months - no matter what type of offers the likes of United and Liverpool are prepared to make.

"It is a joy so many big clubs are watching me because it gives me motivation to keep doing the right thing," says Muriel. "I know it's not just rumours.

"But now I'm focused on saving Lecce from relegation. After that, we'll see ..."

Man Utd alerted as Inter Milan consider Ricky Alvarez offers

Manchester United are on alert over the potential availability of Inter Milan midfielder Ricky Alvarez.

Alvarez chose Inter ahead of both Premier League clubs in the summer, but his time in Italy has been a struggle.

Record says the Argentine could be part of Inter's overhaul at the end of the season and Porto, along with Arsenal and United, are sure to be considering a move for the 23 year-old playmaker.

Petit regrets snubbing Manchester United for Chelsea

Former Arsenal star Emmanuel Petit has conceded he made a mistake in turning down the opportunity to join Manchester United.

The retired midfielder, a World Cup winner with France, had the chance to join Sir Alex Ferguson's side in 2001 upon leaving Barcelona after an unhappy spell in Spain, but instead opted for Chelsea.

Petit revealed he twice met the Old Trafford boss, before choosing to move to Stamford Bridge for family reasons.

"I did make a wrong choice," Petit told Goals on Sunday. "I was talking with my wife at that time and she wanted to come back and live in London. When I think about that I think I made a mistake.

"In my heart I wanted to go to Manchester United. I met Sir Alex Ferguson twice at Barcelona and he wanted me to sign for Manchester. I made the wrong decision."

Petit also believes he struggled to win over Chelsea fans due to his successful stint with London rivals Arsenal.

He added: "With my wife we decided to live in London and it was a wrong choice for me because I was a Gunner and the Chelsea fans never forgave me for that.

"They tried to give a chance for me, but at this time Abramovich wasn't at the club, they were in huge debt and we didn't have one penny to spend in the transfer market.

"Then came the tragedy of September 11 and we had to play in Israel in the European Cup. A lot of players wanted to play the game somewhere else and it ended up that I was branded as a coward because I didn't want to play that game.

"The fans never forgave me for that."

Ferguson reveals plans for Fabio loan

Sir Alex Ferguson plans to send Fabio da Silva away on-loan next season.

Ferguson is wary that the 21-year-old needs regular football at this stage of his career and is willing to farm him out to another club in time for the 2012/2013 campaign. After appearing in the Champions League final against Barcelona last season, the full-back has made 15 appearances this term, with many of them coming in Europe or the Carling Cup.

"I hope that Fabio will develop the same way as his twin [Rafael] and, to help him, he will go out on loan next season to give him concentrated first-team experience," the boss wrote in his exclusive column in Sunday's United Review, the official matchday programme.

"I have already talked to him and he understands the value of playing regularly at a higher level than we can give him at the moment."

Nancy midfielder Bakaye Traore calm about Man Utd rumours

Nancy's Mali midfielder Bakaye Traore is happy to be linked with Manchester United.

But Traore says there's nothing confirmed about links with top clubs.

"Milan are one of the top four teams in the world with Real, Barca and Manchester United," he told SPORT24 about recent speculation. "Also PSG are a great club with great players. But there's nothing concrete."

Man Utd coach Meulensteen: Sir Alex serious about Eden Hazard

Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen admits they're following Belgian star Eden Hazard.

Meulensteen has revealed Fergie's recent scouting trip to Lille was to watch the 21-year-old winger in action.

"The manager wanted to see [Eden] Hazard by himself. That's a sign he thinks it's an interesting player. We talked a lot about him," he told Voetbal International.

"For a club it's important that you keep refreshing your squad.

"Hazard is a special talent, but it always takes a while. As example: We've followed David de Gea for a long time before we got him.

"Ferguson wants to know the character of the player. Because of that he's going to look by himself for players. Hazard is 'the man' at Lille. Ferguson wanted to see if that had an influence on him."

Man Utd won't pressure Pogba to commit

Manchester United won't pressure Paul Pogba about signing a new contract.

His agent, Mino Raiola, doesn't expect the French youngster to wait until the end of the season to make a decision.

"No, I think he'll make the decision when his heart and head is ready to make the decision and there is no date fixed on that," said Raiola, who added that United have not told the player they require a decision by July for the new pre-season.

"Manchester United is behaving like a true gentleman's club, giving the boy all the space to decide. They know it is a difficult decision and [he is] a young boy. So it doesn't make any sense and wouldn't be right to pressure."

Flamengo starlet Adryan confirms he snubbed Manchester United move

Flamengo youngster Adryan has revealed that he held talks with Manchester United over a potential move last summer before deciding to stay in Brazil.

The attacking midfielder is regarded as one of the brightest talents to emerge from Brazil in recent years and has confirmed that he shunned interest from Sir Alex Ferguson’s side to pen a new deal to remain with his current club.

"Man United did talk to me and showed interest," he told Globo Esporte.

"But I was not interested in moving at that point. Let's see if something adequate comes up in the future.

"I don't think about going to Europe so quickly, things need to be done step by step.”

The 17-year-old shone while representing his country during last summer's U-17 World Cup in Egypt, scoring five goals as the Selecao youngsters finished fourth.

Why Man Utd scouts are now watching James Rodriguez every week?

Many inside Colombian football regard James Rodriguez as the best they've had since Carlos Valderrama.

And local fans are buzzing over Manchester United's interest in the FC Porto midfielder. United have had scouts in the stands for Porto's last three games, including Saturday's win at Braga.

For fans in Bogota, it's becoming increasingly apparent that Rodriguez is on the brink of becoming the first Colombian to pull on a Red United shirt.

Rodriguez is well aware he's on the radar of United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and confessed Saturday night: "I'm focused on Porto right now, but I could not refuse Manchester United."

Ferguson's scouts also followed Rodriguez all the way to Miami last month, where he shone in a friendly against Mexico.

Peruvian legend Teofilo Cubillas, regarded among the nation's greatest ever, declared: "I just saw James Rodriguez play in Miami, against Mexico. He confirmed the idea I formed during the U-20 World Championships: he has a bright future."

Played mainly on the flanks at Porto, those who have followed Rodriguez's career see his future as the ideal midfield quarterback - in the mould of Paul Scholes.

For Valderrama, this has to be Rodriguez's long-term position. The former midfield great believes even at Rodriguez's tender age of 20, Colombia should build their World Cup team around the youngster.

"Colombia do not need me. James is comfortable in that position. We have to give support to the young man, help him stay motivated and we must be there for him because I think we have a great player on our hands," declared El Pibe.

Many pundits in Colombia agree. Indeed there's a growing opinion that Rodriguez can surpass Valderrama on and off the pitch as the nation's next great football icon.

"This generation is the best we've had (since his time)," said Valderrama, "and James is a big part of that. He needs time to develop, but the potential is definitely there."

Local fans have known about Rodriguez's talent for years. At just 15, he was playing regularly for Envigado's first team and after two years of senior football was sold to Banfield of Argentina.

Like many foreigners, particularly at just 17 years of age, Rodriguez found his first season away from home difficult. But the following campaign, he announced himself to fans across South America enjoying two superb runs in the Copa Libertadores, including hitting five goals in just seven games in the 2010 tournament.

It was at the end of that campaign when the offers from Europe began to flood in. First from Espanyol of Spain, then Russia's CSKA Moscow before Benfica made contact with Banfield. A deal was close to agreement before great rivals Porto swooped in to table a superior €5 million bid and nick Rodriguez from under Benfica's nose.

"It's really a dream. All players aspire to play in European football and I will now have that opportunity," he said at the time. "I hope to meet everyone's expectations and continue to grow in my career."

Those expectations were met under then manager Andre Villas-Boas, who pushed for Rodriguez to have his contract upgraded after he played a significant role in their Treble winning season.

Indeed, it was one of the last pieces of business AVB did before his departure for Chelsea as he oversaw the youngster's contract extension to 2016 and his buyout clause increased to €45 million last year.

This season he hasn't looked back, establishing himself as an ever-present under new coach Vitor Pereira, who told fans when AVB and several of the Treble team had left, they could be assured that Rodriguez would fill the void.

Now his form has all but convinced Ferguson to make a move at the end of the season. The one stumbling block will be Rodriguez's registration, which is owned by several investment firms. The onus will be on Porto to clear up the youngster's ownership before United make a firm offer.

For Rodriguez, he won't want Porto to dither. He's made it clear if United are serious, he wants to see the move happen:

"I feel very happy here, but if you give me the option to go to United, I am not going to deny that I would like to play at a like club that."
