De Gea pens farewell letter to Atletico fans

David De Gea has wrote an open farewell letter to Atletico Madrid fans.

The 20-year-old, the £18m replacement for the recently retired Edwin van der Sar, spent just one full season in Atletico's first team, before United secured his services, but he leaves a hero with a heavy heart.

"It's been just over a week since I signed the contract with my new team," De Gea said. "It seems like yesterday when I was four years old and I first joined Atletico. On the plane I travel to join Manchester United remembering my time with nostalgia, that nostalgia will be my travelling companion for a long time."

The Spanish goalkeeper won the Europa League with the club he joined as a boy and thanked the fans for the memories he leaves with and vowed they have not seen the last of the goalkeeping prodigy.

"By winning a trophy I leave with a mix of smiles and tears," he added. "This is what happens to me now, so let tears and smiles come for something new but also be assured that I'll come home someday. Thanks for everything."
