Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is the No 1 choice for the Portsmouth hotseat.
Owner Vladimir Antonov flew to Norway last night in a bid to convince the former Manchester United striker to become boss.
Solskjaer has impressed as Molde manager since leaving his post as United's reserve-team chief.
The 38-year-old, who scored 126 goals in 366 games for the Red Devils, has taken Molde to the top of the Norwegian Premier League.
However, a source in his homeland confirmed he would be tempted to return to English football.
Steve Cotterill left Fratton Park last week for Championship rivals Nottingham Forest.
And Antonov is desperate for a high-profile manager to mark his reign as the club's owner and sees Solskjaer as the ideal candidate — despite his inexperience.
The new boss is expected to be handed a substantial transfer kitty in January.
Solskjaer has also been linked with the Blackburn job with Steve Kean under pressure at Ewood Park.
