Ferguson ditched his star man when he discovered that Rooney had gone out on the town to celebrate the 5-0 win over Wigan with team-mates Jonny Evans, Darron Gibson and their partners.
The United boss took the decision despite being hit by an injury and illness crisis.
Rooney, 26, was stunned to be told he was being dropped and that his sense of injustice deepened when he was informed he would also be hit with a club fine.
