Cleverley: Why I chose No23

Tom Cleverley is happy to be running around with the No23 on his back.

The Basingstoke-born lad who has been at United since he was 12. Loan spells at Leicester, Watford and Wigan have turned him into a man.

Cleverley said: "I have always looked on thinking one day I want to be on the pitch.

"It is happening, but I have got to work hard and stay there. Growing up around Gary Neville, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and David Beckham you know the history of the club.

"I looked at Scholes and Beckham, top professionals you can model your game on."

Cleverley even chose No '23' because Becks still wears it.

He said: "The manager offered me 22 or 23. I prefer wearing odd numbers.

"David Beckham was my idol growing up, and he wore No 23 at Real Madrid and still does with LA Galaxy

Ferguson a fan of Blackburn striker Rochina

Sir Alex Ferguson is a big fan of Blackburn Rovers striker Ruben Rochina.

Agent Jerome Anderson, who has been working as an adviser to Rovers, told talkSPORT Ferguson asked after Rochina when speaking with Blackburn manager Steve Kean.

"Whose that, he's going to be some player," Ferguson quizzed Kean.

Rochina was snapped up by Rovers from Barcelona B last January for a knockdown fee.

Man Utd REJECTED Nasri after Fergie meeting

Manchester United rejected the chance to sign new Manchester City midfielder Samir Nasri, it has been revealed.

The People says Nasri was snubbed by rivals United – after he reneged on an initial promise to sign for them.

Nasri went cap in hand back to Old Trafford when he feared his £24m move to the Etihad was about to collapse due to a dispute over agent fees.

But furious United chiefs slammed the door in the Frenchman’s face despite him making a personal plea to revive the deal with the champions.

He had personally agreed a £7m-a-year deal with Old Trafford boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

Fergie and Nasri met in Paris during the summer with the player’s representatives in tow and after a deal was thrashed out the player confirmed he was thrilled at the prospect of becoming a United player.

The transfer stalled – and later collapsed altogether – when Nasri’s agents insisted on a massive £4m tax-free as their cut.

United refused to cough up the cash, leaving the way clear for moneybags City to make a more lucrative, £9m-a-year offer.

Coach Meulensteen: Players would welcome Sneijder

Rene Meulensteen insists any late move for Inter Milan midfielder Wesley Sneijder would be welcomed by the players.

The prospect of Sneijder moving to United before tomorrow night's transfer deadline has cooled with the club's young players kicking off the season so well.

Meulensteen told Voetbal International: "Sir Alex Ferguson has a tremendous confidence in our current squad, but a player of the likes of Wesley Sneijder would be suitable for us.

"I said and I repeat again: where there's a will, there is always a way, there is always a possibility.

"And if the club bought Sneijder, we could only be happy. Despite our squad being very young, we do not see why a player like Sneijder at 27 years old cannot adapt to our team.

"We will play many games, it will be a difficult season, we'll see if the club decides to buy him or not."

Asamoah Gyan confesses Man Utd ambition

Sunderland striker Asamoah Gyan admits he has ambitions of playing for Manchester United.

While in Ghana to open an academy, Ghanasoccernet.com asked him about a dream of one day representing United.

“Honestly, that is what I have always wanted since I am a Man U fan,” the Sunderland striker answered, with unnerving candour.

"But you have to work hard to get there, everyone wants to be at the top but I am now fully concentrating on Sunderland."

CSKA Moscow make late move for keeper Kuszczak

CSKA Moscow are making a late move for Manchester United goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak.

The Poland international is strictly third-choice at Old Trafford and keen to move away today.

CSKA are moving for Kuszczak as they could be without first-choice goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev for up to six months.

Ferguson posts Man Utd scouts to watch Borussia Dortmund defender Subotic

Manchester United are keeping tabs on Borussia Dortmund defender Neven Subotic.

A move today for the Serbia international is unlikely, but United scouts are watching the American-raised centre-half.

Blic says United boss Sir Alex Ferguson will move to sign Subotic in the summer of 2012.

Newcastle & QPR chasing loan signature of striker Federico Macheda

Federico Macheda is poised to join a Premier League side on loan to gain top-flight experience, according to the player’s agent, with a return to Italy ruled out.

The Italian under-21 international’s representative Giovanni Bia has revealed Newcastle are leading the race to sign him on a temporary basis, although QPR are also interested.

Red Devils' boss Sir Alex Ferguson previously stated his intention to keep all his forwards at the club, but now appears willing to let the 20-year-old leave to get first-team action.

"Macheda doesn't return to Italy, Manchester United will send him on loan in the Premier League," the agent told calciomercato.com.

"At this time Newcastle has the edge over Queens Park Rangers."

Macheda burst on to the scene scoring a dramatic winner on his debut three seasons back to send United to the top of the table, but has since failed to establish himself and spent the second half of last season on loan to Sampdoria.

He currently finds himself behind Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez, Danny Welbeck, Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen.

Both Newcastle and QPR find themselves short of options up front and it appears that both clubs see Macheda as a useful addition to their squads.

Vidic is £25m target for moneybags Anzhi

Mega-rich Anzhi Makhachkala are ready to test Manchester United's resolve over Nemanja Vidic with a £25m bid.

The Russians want to follow their stunning capture of Inter Milan striker Samuel Eto'o, reportedly being paid £350,000 a week, by signing warhorse Vidic.

United saw off interest from Real Madrid and AC Milan last summer by giving the captain's armband to the 29-year-old Serbian and handing him a new four-year contract.

But the signing of England Under 21 defenders Chris Smalling and Phil Jones and the emergence of Jonny Evans has given Sir Alex Ferguson and embarrassment of riches.

And Anzhi, controlled by Russian billionaire Suleyman Kerimou, are hoping United may be willing to cash in on a player who cost just £7m from Spartak Moscow in 2006.

Meulensteen leaves door open for late Sneijder deal

Rene Meulensteen says a move for Inter Milan star Wesley Sneijder could still happen this week.

In an interview with Voetbal International, Meulensteen has claimed there is a chance a deal can still happen.

He said: "A player the calibre of Wesley Sneijder could well suit us.

"I've said it before and I repeat it again where there’s a will, there's always a way.”

Winger Brady outstanding on-loan at Hull

Robbie Brady was outstanding for Hull City in victory over Reading.

Brady struck a wonder goal to prove the Tigers' matchwinner.

Dublin-born Brady is on a six-month loan from United.

Hull skipper Andy Dawson said: "The lad is top class in terms of attitude and ability.

"There were times when things didn't go his way but that made him work harder and he got his reward.

"Did he mean it? Well, the first thing you do as a wideman when you cut in is aim for that far post. If he got a bit lucky, nobody can say he didn't deserve it."

Eight reasons why Manchester United's 8-2 rout of Arsenal is just the beginning for Sir Alex Ferguson's next generation

The sheer, unwavering authority with which Manchester United humiliated Arsenal during their 8-2 victory at Old Trafford on Sunday was such that you'd be forgiven for thinking that we'd never seen anything comparable between these two Premier League powerhouses.

However, only a decade ago did Sir Alex Ferguson's side obliterate the Gunners 6-1 at the Theatre of Dreams as the Scot's 'Treble generation' marched towards their seventh Premier League title. They would only win one more in the five years that followed.

It is that which makes Sunday's win so potentially significant. Indeed, the class of 2001 were laced with silverware and memories of the 1999 Champions League final but that was a group of players, triumphant as it was, coming to the end of their peak. United's current side aren't even close to reaching theirs.

The average age of the team that beat the likes of Henry, Pires and Wiltord 10 years ago was 27, four years older than Fergie's 2011 crop. With the aging Fabien Barthez, Roy Keane and Dwight Yorke as well as only one player under the age of 24 in Wes Brown, the final stage of the Treble team had all the quality of the side that we saw prove so dominant on Sunday but nothing like the same amount of unlocked potential.

Jonathan Birchall has taken a look at eight reasons why despite already looking unstoppable, this is only the beginning for Sir Alex's current champions.

'Playing for Manchester United doesn't all of a sudden make me a great footballer' – Tom Cleverley

Tom Cleverley insists he will be keeping his feet firmly on the ground after being named in the England squad.

Cleverley was called up to the squad to play a friendly against the Netherlands after impressing for his club in the Community Shield, but the match was postponed due to riots in the English capital.

But Cleverley has been given the chance to earn his Three Lions debut after being named in the squad to face Bulgaria and Wales in England’s qualifiers for Euro 2012.

The 22-year-old told reporters: "Although I feel I improved in pre-season, I am still the same player and the same guy. Just because I am playing in United's first team, that doesn't all of a sudden make me a great footballer.

"It is a bit strange when people are talking about you, but in my head I am still the same footballer who was sent out on loan to Wigan last year. The only difference is that I am turning out for Manchester United now."

Cleverley is just one of a handful of youngsters to have figured in United's sensational start to the season, which continued on Sunday with a historic 8-2 win over Arsenal.

"Nobody wants to get too carried away, but this is a youthful squad and it is exciting to be part of it," Cleverley continued.

"Some of us younger lads don't know what it is like to win the Premier League yet but that is where the experience of others comes into it. A few older players left the club in the summer but we have still got experience in abundance."

Cleverley is joined by team-mates Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Ashley Young and Wayne Rooney in the England squad.

Wayne Rooney becomes Manchester United's all-time top Premier League goalscorer with Arsenal hat-trick

Wayne Rooney raced ahead of team-mate Ryan Giggs as the club's all-time top Premier League goalscorer with two wonderfully struck free-kicks and a penalty in Sunday afternoon's win over Arsenal.

The former Everton man has made a formidable start to the new Premier League season with four goals in three games, and having netted in both the games against Tottenham and West Brom was again on the scoresheet in the clash with the Gunners.

His first two strikes against Arsene Wenger's side were wonderful free-kicks finding either corner of Wojciech Szczesney's goal.

The England man then wrestled the ball off previous all-time top Premier League goalscorer Ryan Giggs to complete his hat-trick with a well-struck penalty to take the score to 7-2 in what proved to be a rout at Old Trafford.

It was a day of records, with Arsene Wenger suffering his worst ever defeat as Arsenal manager. It prolongs the club's run to six Premier League games without a win, dating back to the tail-end of last season, which is also the worst run of Wenger's run.

Arsenal have won just two Premier League games in their last 14, and have had a man sent off in all three of their league games in this campaign, Carl Jenkinson dismissed against United just as Emmanuel Frimpong had been against Liverpool and Gervinho against Newcastle.

But the day belonged to Rooney, who began his Manchester United career with a hat-trick too, against Fenerbahce in the Champions League.

His first ever Premier League goal came against Arsenal as a 16-year-old playing for Everton, while his first league goal in United colours also came against Arsenal at Old Trafford in October 2004.

Danny Welbeck ruled out for up to five weeks with hamstring injury

Danny Welbeck is set for an injury lay-off of up to five weeks after suffering a hamstring injury in the 8-2 win over Arsenal.

The 20-year-old scored the opening goal of the game before pulling up short clutching his left leg.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed after the game the forward had pulled his hamstring, and will be sidelined for a month.

Ferguson told BBC Sport: “It is a loss for us and for England.

“Danny complained of a tight hamstring before he actually pulled it and we couldn’t get Hernandez on quick enough.

“It is a shame for Danny but it [his absence] will be around four to five weeks.”

Ferguson surprised with ease of Arsenal victory

Sir Alex Ferguson did not expect the comfortable 8-2 win over Arsenal at Old Trafford, despite the Gunners missing so many first team regulars.

"It is (a surprise) because when you play Arsenal you expect a difficult game," he said.

"If you look at Arsenal the team is weakened - but we still did the job.

"We got careless at times and they made chances because they still have quality up front.

"But overall we are very satisfied that we kept the performance levels up."

With his counterpart Wenger likely to come in for more criticism this week, Ferguson was sympathetic towards the Frenchman.

"I think it is unfair to criticise him," he said.

"The job he's done for Arsenal and the philosophy he has - he has given Arsenal some very entertaining players.

"He's also sold well and looked after the Arsenal coffers. People forget these things. It's a cynical world now and when you lose a few games the judges come out."

Ferguson to outline Scholes role this week

Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to outline Paul Scholes' coaching role this week.

The Sunday Mirror says Scholes, who retired from playing at the end of last season and had a testimonial at Old Trafford earlier this month, has already been offered a place on coaching staff.

But the job description will be detailed and finalised on Scholes’ return from a family holiday.

Ferguson said: “Paul will be back this week and we’ll have talks. But he’ll be coaching with us.”

Keeper Amos eyeing new loan move

Ben Amos is set for a new loan move away.

The Daily Star Sunday says Amos has discussed going out on loan again after previous temporary moves to Peterborough and Oldham.

Amos was named in the England Under-21s squad last week but is currently fourth-choice keeper at Old Trafford behind David de Gea, Anders Lindegaard and Tomasz Kuszczak.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson believes in giving young players experience through loan deals.

Hargreaves holds no grudge against Man Utd over departure

Owen Hargreaves holds no grudge against Manchester United after his release.

The free agent is now in talks with West Bromwich Albion after proving his fitness.

Hargreaves told the Daily Mail: "I don't blame them for letting me go.

"I can understand it. There comes a point when you have to say this hasn't worked out. The game has moved on. See you later, all the best.

"David Gill's a terrific guy and a terrific chief executive. And with the boss there is no animosity. There was probably a lot of frustration on his part even if there was a lot more on mine.

"I told the boss I will play 40 games this season. He said he could see me playing again, but he wanted to start bringing the younger players through. When I played for him he was fantastic.

"He's a great manager. He knows the players who can win a game for him. He's the best at that.

"The guys were great, too. It's a wonderful club. The people behind the scenes are terrific. Some of the guys on the medical staff have become great friends. At one stage I did offer to play for nothing this season, just to stay on. But they said, "You don't want to do that" and they were probably right."

Diouf delighted with reserves scoring form

Mame Biram Diouf hopes his goal scoring for Manchester United reserves has caught the eye of Sir Alex Ferguson.

Diouf struck a double in victory over Swansea City this week.

“Football is always a competition but hopefully I'll get more opportunities, more games and more experience,” he told MUTV.

“Being at United is a wonderful thing and being one of the seven strikers is only going to help me learn. It's always good to play alongside Rooney, Welbeck or Berbatov.

“I've got two Reserves games under my belt now, I'm working hard and focusing on the next game, so I can be ready for whenever I get the chance in the first team.”

Everton boss Moyes scouts Man Utd reserves

David Moyes is eyeing several Manchester United loan targets.

Moyes was in the stands for United reserves' thumping of Swansea City this week.

The Scot is seeking to add to his strike-force and has been linked with Kiko Macheda and Mame Biram Diouf.

Revealed: Ferguson signed Nani expecting to sell Real Madrid star Ronaldo

Sir Alex Ferguson admits he was planning for Cristiano Ronaldo's departure when first signing Nani.

Ronaldo left United last summer in a world record £80 million move for Real Madrid.

“Cristiano had two years left, I think, when we let him go,” said Ferguson. “We had him for six years and the issue is how long do you think you’re going to keep European players?

“We like to think they’d stay here forever, and some have been very good that way. But with Cristiano, he’d always had this dream he wanted to play for Real Madrid. He fulfilled part of his dream by playing for Manchester United for six years and then he wanted to do the same with Real Madrid. I understood that part because he was a fantastic professional for me.

“Even though he wanted to go to Real Madrid the previous year, it didn’t stop him from being a top player. Everything was perfect with the boy, he was a professional right down to his bootlaces.

“You have to plan ahead. We looked ahead and got Nani. You can only do your best in terms of preparing for the inevitable and make sure you’re stocked up with enough players to compensate for it.”

Ferguson hails Berbatov attitude: He has been brilliant

Sir Alex Ferguson has praised Dimitar Berbatov for the attitude shown for the start of the season.

Despite Danny Welbeck’s emergence and Javier Hernandez’s return to fitness giving the manager more options in attack, the Bulgarian’s attitude has been exemplary.

With Michael Owen also back in full training, the competition is probably as tough for a place in the forward line as anywhere within the champions' star-studded squad.

“Berbatov has been brilliant,” Ferguson told manutd.com. “His handling of the situation has been terrific. He’s not complained one bit.

“He’s a really good professional and he’ll play his part, like all the players on the team. It won’t be at this moment in time because the space between games is good. Then we’ve got the international break for two weeks and, when they come back, the European games start up and Berbatov will be involved as he’s got the experience and the ability to play a big part.”

Ferguson admits Gibson injury

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed an injury for Darron Gibson.

Gibson faces a spell on the sidelines after manager Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed the midfielder has picked up an injury in training.

The ankle problem is set to keep the 25-year-old out of European qualifying action with Giovanni Trapattoni’s Republic of Ireland but the boss hopes it is nothing too serious.

“Darron got a crack in training the other day,” revealed Sir Alex. “He’s withdrawn from the Republic of Ireland team.

“There’s no break or anything like that but it’s pretty bad bruising. He’s out for Ireland and is staying with us at the moment.”

Son of Cypriot legend Demetris Ioannou makes progress at Man Utd

Nicholas Ioannou was on the bench for Manchester United U18 yesterday.

The midfielder is the son of Cypriot legend Demetris Ioannou and has been with United since he was 11 years of age. Demetris is regarded as one of the greatest Cypriot centre backs of all time and captained the Cyprus National Team for a four year period.

Ioannou Jr did not get off the bench in the 4-2 defeat to Southampton.

Capello praise for Man Utd defender Jones

England coach Fabio Capello is impressed by Manchester United defender Phil Jones.

Capello is unlikely to pick him for Friday’s Euro 2012 qualifier in Bulgaria, but Jones has been earmarked for future glory.

Capello said: “Jones is so young and a good talent for England. He is like Jack Wilshere – he played well at every level.

“He wants the ball, he asks for it. It is not easy to find a player who is so young that plays with so much confidence.

“He’s never played with the national team but he is the future.

Schmeichel: De Gea errors not massive

Peter Schmeichel insists David De Gea will overcome is shaky start to his Old Trafford career.

The summer signing looked more solid against Tottenham in United's 3-0 win on Monday and Danish great Schmeichel believes there is much more to come from him, given time.

"He's very unfairly, in my opinion, been criticised, even before he played his first game," Schmeichel told Five Live Sport.

"I wouldn't say he's made massive mistakes."

Schmeichel added: "I thought he showed tremendous character in the game against Tottenham the other day. He wasn't fazed by being at Old Trafford.

"Everything he did was good - his catching, distribution was spot on. I think he has learned something.

"He's only young and it takes a little bit of time to adjust to the kind of football we play in the Premier League, the kind of players you play against and the kind of referees we have, who allow a lot more physical contact.

"He needs to learn and I think he has a great future ahead of him."

Match Analysis: Manchester United 8-2 Arsenal: Wenger’s heaviest defeat as Arsenal manager

An astonishing game ended with a resounding Manchester United victory.

Sir Alex Ferguson kept the side that defeated Tottenham on Monday, with Danny Welbeck continuing upfront.

Arsene Wenger was without Thomas Vermaelen and Bacary Sagna to add to various previous injury and suspension problems, so Carl Jenkinson played at right-back, and Johan Djourou in the centre. Francis Coquelin made his debut in the centre of midfield.

The match was a barely believable stream of United chances in an amazingly dominant display. Arsenal were wretched from start to finish, completely unable to make the most of their numerical midfield advantage, and remarkably disorganised at the back.

Defence

Where to begin? It’s difficult to look at an 8-2 and break it down into specific areas that went wrong. Arsenal were simply poorer in every possible attribute that goes into competing in a football match, and the logical continuation of this stream of thought is that Arsenal’s problems do not lie predominantly in tactical issues – there’s something deeper that must be addressed.

That’s not to say that there weren’t tactical problems, however. For a start, they lacked any kind of cohesiveness without the ball. Some of the side seemed to be pressing, some seemed to be standing off. Coquelin, thrown into such a huge game on his debut, played a relatively deep position and picked up Rooney.

Bizarrely, despite Rooney claiming a hat-trick, Coquelin did reasonably well: Rooney’s impact upon the game in open play was relatively little in the first half, and all three of his goals came from set-piece situations. Wenger’s decision to remove Coquelin at 3-1 on 61 minutes (though possibly because of fitness reasons) backfired spectacularly.

That was the only thing that went OK for Arsenal. The problem with pressing meant that Arsenal frequently had no pressure on the ball in midfield – despite the fact that they could afford Coquelin sitting, because Aaron Ramsey and Tomas Rosicky could close down Anderson and Tom Cleverley. Somehow, and again arguably due to fitness reasons, this failed – Anderson and Cleverley got time on the ball and could hit passes over the top.

The secondary issue was with the high defensive line, which is suicidal enough when there is no pressure on the ball – but that almost becomes a pedantic point when the main issue was that the back four was incapable of moving as a unit.

Two players would step up, two would drop back. Sometimes it was amazingly easy for United players to waltz through and score – the Nani goal being the best example. On other occasions a lone Arsenal player would become trapped behind the rest of his defence and be forced into a last-ditch tackle – Jenkinson collected both his bookings in this fashion.

United were frequently pleasing on the eye, and the quality of their finishing was consistently superb, but they didn’t even have to play particularly well. They passed the ball much better in the 3-0 win over Tottenham and in the 3-2 win over Manchester City.

Some of the goals – the Park Ji-Sung shot, the Welbeck header – simply came as they had too much time and space on the ball. Rooney’s three goals came because Arsenal had conceded fouls by diving in. Young’s strikes were superb – yet if they’d been the only goals in a 2-0 win, we would have been here questioning why a right-footed player was allowed to come inside onto his stronger side so easily. Almost everything went wrong for Arsenal.

Basic errors

Arsenal were outclassed. United completed 64% of the tackles they attempted, Arsenal just 45%. Despite the ball spending most of the time on the edge of the Arsenal area, United managed to block six shots compared to Arsenal’s one.

Getting tackles in, getting blocks in – not sophisticated, not the Arsenal way and unlikely to be a deciding factor upon the game, but when your side can’t keep the ball, can’t keep an offside line and is letting the opposition play, these are the things you have to be halfway decent at. If not, you’re liable to concede eight goals.

Conclusion

Part of the issue, in simplistic terms, is that Arsenal didn’t have players who were fit to perform the tasks required. Some of this was because they lacked experience, some because they were simply the wrong players for the situation.

Laurent Koscielny finished with a 100% pass completion ratio…yet kept getting caught too high up the pitch when defending. Carl Jenkinson was a force going forward and got an assist…yet didn’t make a single successful tackle. Ramsey and Rosicky are creators, not battlers. To use these type of players in the positions they played in, you must be in control of the game, and Arsenal were never close to that.

United continue their impressive start, though even they must have been surprised at how easy it was. Their 4-4-2 shape (with two strikers coming deep) provides forward runs from a lot of different angles, and with Nani and Ashley Young being able to go down the line or inside for a shot, they are very dangerous going forward.

Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham earnings from 2010-11 Champions League revealed

Figures announced from Uefa show English clubs have made a profit of around €130 million (£114m) from last year’s Champions League competition.

Manchester United profited the most out of the English clubs, having reached the final at Wembley, where they lost 3-1 to Barcelona.

They gained €53.197m (£46m) in payments from Uefa, comprising more than €27m (£23.7m) for their performances from the Champions League group stage onwards, and they gained a further €25.9m (£22.7m) out of the television market pool, whilst also picking up €5.6m (£4.9m) for being runners-up.

Chelsea were another major earner from the competition as they earned €44.523m (£38m) for their performances and television rights.

They were third on the list of high earners, ahead of other European clubs such as Schalke, Real Madrid, Inter, Bayern Munich and London rivals Tottenham.

Spurs earned €31.1m (£27.3m) for their performances, which saw them famously beat AC Milan in the knock-out stages and Inter in the group stage.

Barcelona, the competition winners, picked up €51.025m (£44.8m).

How Ashley Young could shine at the top of a Manchester United diamond in 2011-12

By Jonathan Birchall

It was hardly taken at a canter but Manchester United’s path to the Premier League title had a sense of inevitability about it long before the season came to an end.

However, it was somewhat fitting that the best team in the land secured their 19th title through a questionable penalty and a scrappy performance away to relegation battlers Blackburn as 2010-11 was no Red Devils vintage.

The temptation would be to say that Sir Alex Ferguson won’t care as long as the trophy cabinet at Old Trafford bulges, but it is the pursuit of perfection that he craves, not merely doing enough to scrape by – and last season’s stats tell their own story.

In 2009-10, Carlo Ancelotti’s Chelsea scored 103 goals on the way to the title. Only a point behind, United hit the back of the net 86 times. Last season’s champions, however, scored 25 goals fewer than the team that they displaced at English football’s summit with a mere 78 and finished with six points less than when they had finished as runners-up 12 months earlier.

Furthermore, United kept possession more successfully in 2009-10 than a year later and averaged more shots per game despite the addition of undoubted success story Javier Hernandez.

With the Mexican in blistering form and Wayne Rooney resurgent, the question of United’s relative timidity in front of goal begs the question of where the problem lies.
