Manchester United's makeshift fullback Chris Smalling sees his future at centre-half.
Smalling, who three years ago was playing non-league football for Maidstone United, is certain that his best position is in the middle.
He said: “I think my natural position is as a centre-back and I hope that in the future I’ll get to play there for club and country.
“I feel more comfortable in that role because that’s where I have always played. I was hoping that I’d maybe done enough to get in the England team.
“But to play for United and now England in a position I’m not used to has been difficult. It has been a steep learning curve.
“Of course, I’ll play wherever I’m needed. But my aim is to play in central defence.
“I want to be challenging Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic at United because that’s where I feel I’m at my best.
“I can do a job at right-back but I see it as a temporary thing.
“If Sir Alex tells me to play full-back then I’ll try my best to do the job, but I think I am definitely a centre-half.”
