Bebe has been ruled out for six months with a serious knee injury.

The attacker has had a tough time since signing for the English champions back in August 2010, and has been loaned out to Besiktas for the 2011-12 season.

The former Vitoria man was eager to get his career back on track at Carlos Carvalhal's side, but the Turkish club have confirmed that the 21-year-old needs surgery.

"A scan has shown an anterior cruciate ligament tear to his left knee and he will be unable to play for six months," a statement on the Besiktas website reads.

"Surgery is required and we have contacted Manchester United and there will be a joint decision about where the operation will be done."

 Portuguese forward Bebe intends to use his season-long loan at Besiktas to prove that Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was right to pay £7.4million for him.

The 20-year-old Portuguese has made just seven first-team appearances since his surprise move to Old Trafford from Guimaraes last summer.

But he said: 'I was happy to come to the best team in Turkey. I want to prove that Ferguson was not wrong by hiring me. He relied heavily on me, but unfortunately I could not show my value and I want to do this in Besiktas.'

United believe the move to Besiktas for the duration of the 2011-12 campaign will aid his development, but there is widespread doubt that he will play for the club again.

Besiktas confirm loan signing of forward Bebe

Turkish side Besiktas have confirmed the loan signing of striker Bebe for a fee of £876,000.

Besiktas announced the transfer on their official website after the Turkish stock market read that an agreement has been reached between the two clubs for the transfer of the 20-year-old.

Bebe, an Under-21 international for Portugal, was surprisingly signed by Manchester United last summer, just days after Vitoria de Guimaraes had brought him in from Estrela da Amadora for nothing.

The player had very few chances to shine in his first season at Old Trafford as he spent most of his time in the reserve squad.

It is still unknown whether the Turkish side have secured a buying option for the player.

Ferguson may cash in on Gibson and Kuszczak but hold onto Bebe.

The Manchester Evening News says the probability is that Fergie’s rebuilding work will be concentrated on the midfield and that could further damage Gibson’s chances.

Manchester United only paid £4.8 million for Bebe, confirmed Vitoria Guimaraes president Emilio Macedo.

It was claimed United had coughed up £7.4 million for the Portugal U21 striker in August.

But speaking at an assembly of club associates, Vitoria president Emilio Macedo said that the club only received £4.8m from United for the transfer.
