Manchester United fans made their feelings known over Darron Gibson's sale to Everton on Friday.

The People says United's official Facebook page announced that Gibson’s move to Everton had been finalised on Friday morning – and within 30 minutes, the news was greeted with 15,000 ‘likes’ from the club’s fans.

Gibson made his debut for Everton in Saturday's 1-1 draw at Aston Villa.

Darron Gibson has revealed that Wayne Rooney played a key role in his move to Everton from Manchester United.

The Irishman left the Red Devils to sign a four-and-a-half year contract with the Merseyside outfit after the clubs agreed an undisclosed fee on Friday.

Rooney came through the ranks at Goodison Park as a youth player, and despite leaving the club to switch to Old Trafford in 2004, he has proved influential in persuading Gibson that a move to David Moyes' side would be beneficial to him.

“Wayne just told me it was a great club,” Gibson told Evertontv.

“He told me he really enjoyed his time here. He really enjoyed the people here and the players were great as well.

“I think having a word with him and having a word with people like Tim Cahill and Phil Neville just convinced me the decision was right to come.”

With Ireland having qualified for Euro 2012, Gibson knows a strong second half to the season is essential to his chances of being picked by manager Giovanni Trapattoni, something the 24-year-old suggests was vital in his decision to leave the current Premier League champions.

“Obviously I wasn’t playing at Man United which means it was hard for the international manager to pick me,” he added.

“Hopefully once I start playing here, he will have no choice but to play me.”

His old boss believes Gibson regretted not joining Sunderland when he had the chance in the summer and now expects him to do well at Goodison Park.

“It's a good move for Darron,” Sir Alex told reporters on Friday. “He has to get on with his career.

"He played some terrific games for us and he has terrific ability, but in terms of the pecking order here he knew he wouldn't be a first-team regular all the time.

“Unfortunately he got an injury earlier in the season which kept him out for ten weeks, but he’s fit again and it’s a good opportunity for him.

“He missed the chance to go to Sunderland [in the summer] and I think he regretted that. He's taken the opportunity to go to Everton and I think they really need a player like him.

“They're getting a player of good quality who has the experience of playing here. The other players we’ve sent to Everton, like Tim Howard and Phil Neville, have done fantastically well for them. Hopefully this is another one.”

Gibson, who has been at United since 2005, was understood to be looking for wages of around £40,000 a week.

But the Black Cats' final offer was short of that.

So Gibson could now be off to Stoke or Wigan - with United having left him behind to sort out his future rather than take him on their US tour.

And Ferguson revealed: "Darron was undecided about what to do when we made the group up to come here - and we both felt he'd be better staying back.

"He seems to be in limbo at the moment."

But now the 23-year-old midfielder admits: “It wouldn’t faze me one bit to leave, all I want is what’s best for me.

“So if the best thing for me is to leave and go to a club where I’ll play every week then so be it.

“I haven’t talked with Sir Alex about it but, obviously, if it comes to me not playing as much as I would like next season then I’ll have to move on.

“I’m nearly 24 and it’s come to the stage where I’m going to have to go somewhere else if I don’t start playing regularly.

The futures of three senior Man Utd players are under a cloud.

The Telegraph says the futures of Dimitar Berbatov, John O’Shea and Darron Gibson - all of whom are out of contract next summer - are unlikely to be resolved until the new year.

They are all expected to remain at the club beyond this summer.

Wes Brown, whose contract also expires next year, is likely to be sold during the closed season.

It must have seemed a good idea for midfielder Darron Gibson to follow his team-mates and open a Twitter account with star striker Wayne Rooney attracting almost 200,000 followers after only joining the site on Saturday morning.

However Gibson deleted his Twitter account less than two hours after joining the social network site today after receiving a volley of abusive messages from supposed United fans unimpressed with his abilities.

The 23 year old set up the account @dgibbo28 shortly after midday but was immediately inundated by negative messages regarding his exploits for United and the Republic of Ireland.

After the page was deleted some Twitter users tried to begin a campaign to get Gibson to return.

Gibson has been unable to establish himself as a first-team regular at Old Trafford since making his debut in a League Cup match in 2005.

He was also at the centre of a dispute over his international allegiance when he opted to play for the Republic of Ireland instead of Northern Ireland in 2007.
