David Gill: Manchester United will not make any more signings in this transfer window

Manchester United chief executive David Gill has said there will be no more signings for the club before the summer transfer window closes next week.

Speaking at the Champions League draw in Monaco, where the Red Devils were favourably paired with Benfica, Basel and competition newcomers Otelul Galati from Romania, Gill stated his belief that the current squad was good enough for the club to challenge on all fronts.

“I don’t think there will be any more new arrivals, no,” he admitted to Sky Sports.

“We have looked at various players and are confident in the current squad we have at our disposal.

“We will progress with what we have now and Sir Alex will look to get the best out of them over the next few months.

“We are very happy with the squad we have - we made some great additions this summer and everyone is pointing out the young and vibrant look around our team. The most important person at the club is Sir Alex, though, and we look forward to a great season under him.

“Many other clubs have strengthened too, especially in England, but we feel we are well equipped for the many months that lie ahead of us.”

Giving his reaction to the draw, Gill said manager Sir Alex Ferguson had already indicated he was happy with United’s opponents for the group stages of Europe’s elite club competition.

The Old Trafford chief executive added: “Sir Alex is happy with the draw, I have already received a text from him and he’s happy with who we have got.

“We have had great success in the last few years in the competition and we are looking forward to it again this year.

“This is the kick off to the European season and seeing all these big teams together means we are looking forward to it immensely.

“We have had great matches against Benfica in the past. We saw Sir Bobby Charlton draw them out to play us – I was speaking to him before the draw and he was reminiscing about the fantastic night where we beat them in the final at Wembley in 1968, so it’s poetic justice to draw them.

“We are looking forward to those two ties; we had good games with them in the mid 2000’s, so to go back to Portugal will be a great occasion.

“We drew the new Romanian team – congratulations to them for getting into the competition and we look forward to going there. We have got to be happy to get them; more new teams are coming into the competition each year under the increased access rules, which I feel is good for European football, but we are confident of success there.

“Basel we have crossed swords with before and I remember a match which saw Ruud van Nistelrooy scoring a great goal against them away from home, so Sir Alex is pleased to be going back there too.

“We look forward to the competition and accept there are challenges ahead, but are very comfortable with the draw we have been given.”

Barnsley sign Man Utd midfielder Drinkwater

Barnsley have signed Manchester United midfielder Danny Drinkwater on-loan.

Following previous spells with Huddersfield, Cardiff and Watford, the 21-year-old is Keith Hill's 10th signing for the new season.

"Drinkwater is a few years ahead of the younger lads in his development," Reserves boss Warren Joyce told ManUtd.com. "He's had two or three loan spells. Two have been successful but there's one that's not been due to injuries hampering his loan appearances.

"But he has developed and is a lot physically stronger. He's done a lot more things than the youth team boys and that's why we're getting him out on loan again."

Man Utd in contact with Borussia Dortmund for Kagawa information

Manchester United are in contact with Borussia Dortmund for attacking midfielder Shinji Kagawa.

Kagawa has confessed an ambition to play for United after learning of their interest earlier this summer.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has no immediate plans to sign the Japan international, but will monitor his progress this season with the view to moving for him next summer.

United are already in contact with BVB for Mario Gotze and also have registered their interest for Kagawa.

Ferguson: Finding young centre-halves always priority

Sir Alex Ferguson is delighted with his young defenders.

Ferguson said the way his young defence performed against Tottenham vindicated his decision to go into the market for them, despite having Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic at his disposal.

"You have to prepare for the future and we're always looking for young centre-backs," said Ferguson. "Sometimes we develop them, like Gerard Pique, Jonny Evans or Ryan Shawcross, who we sold to Stoke some time ago.

"You're always looking for young centre-backs because it's such an important position in terms of the spine of your team, which needs to be strong.

"We identified Chris Smalling and Phil Jones over the past year and they've done exceptionally well, both of them, and of course Jonny Evans grew up at the club. He's been with us since he was 12-years-old.

"It's interesting because, years ago, you used to get plenty of centre-backs, they were falling off trees. But for some reason, over the last 10 years, it's become more difficult to get really top centre-backs.

"You don't know why that's the case, but it's an interesting fact that you just can't get the centre-backs you were able to get.

"There's more emphasis now on attacking play from all clubs, which means there's less concentration on the really top defending you used to get, particularly in Italy, with players like [Claudio] Gentile, who could man-mark.

"You don't get man-marking these days, it's all zonal defending, so it's a big change that way."

Scunthorpe signing Norwood hopes for Man Utd future

Scunthorpe United loan signing Oliver Norwood still wants a future at parent club Manchester United.

The midfielder moved to Scunthorpe yesterday.

Norwood told the Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph: "To make it in the Manchester United first team, it has always been my dream.

"It is every kid’s dream. Realistically, will it happen? I am not sure but I’d like to give it my best shot, come here, get the games, do the best I can and see where that takes me. I have been in the Reserves now for two full seasons - this would have been my third - and I think it is getting a bit easy for me because we are playing against the same teams every year. You are not really challenging yourself."

Ferguson warns Vidic, Ferdinand place not guaranteed

Sir Alex Ferguson has warned senior defenders Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic they face a battle earning a return to the first team.

Ferdinand, 32, skipper Vidic, 29, and the rest of the club's established stars know they have a new challenge on their hands to retain regular first-team football.

Ferguson said: "Rio and Nemanja are aware of the abilities of the young players. There is no question about that.

"When they are both fit, or one of them is, I will have a decision to make."

Man Utd plan new double-your-money deals for Welbeck, Cleverley

Manchester United plan to upgrade the contracts of young duo Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley.

The Sun says they are to be rewarded with double-your-money five-year deals.

Old Trafford bosses were already preparing contract reviews, which would see their pay shoot to £40,000 a week, before Monday's heroics in the home win against Tottenham.

Striker Welbeck, who scored one and crafted another in the 3-0 win, has little under two years remaining on his existing terms.

Both he and midfield ace Cleverley, who only signed a three-year extension last summer, are currently two of the lowest-paid in United's first-team squad.

Fabio: Rafael and I wanted to move to Man Utd later in careers

Fabio da Silva admits he and twin brother Rafael didn't plan to move to Manchester United when they did.

The former Fluminense fullbacks have now been three years at United.

"Of course it is always difficult to change your country, more so when I'm in love with Brazil, I love my city, Petropolis. But after three years we have already become used to things.

"We really wanted to have played professionally for Fluminense, it was our dream. It has not happened, we came here at a very early, at age 17.

"This was not our goal, we wanted to come when a little older. But it was good to get experience and it has been good so far."

Man Utd know buyout clause for Flamengo starlet Adryan

Flamengo starlet Adryan is happy to stay in Brazil for the coming season.

Fla have resisted requests from Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson about taking the young attacker on trial at Carrington this month.

Instead, Adryan has penned a new contract through to 2014, with two buyout clauses.

For local clubs, Adryan can be signed for £12 million and for foreign clubs like United, his clause is £18 million.

Ferguson ends BBC row

Sir Alex Ferguson has ended his rift with the BBC.

Ferguson has not spoken to the corporation on team matters since 2004 following the broadcast of a TV documentary containing allegations about his son, Jason.

A joint statement released by United and the BBC today read: "Sir Alex Ferguson and the BBC have decided to put behind them the difficulties which led to Sir Alex feeling unable to appear on BBC programmes.

"This follows a meeting between Sir Alex and the BBC's director general, Mark Thompson, and BBC North director Peter Salmon, and the issues have been resolved to the satisfaction of both parties.

"Sir Alex will now make himself available to the BBC for Match of the Day, Radio 5 Live and other outlets as agreed.

"No further comment will be made by either party on this issue."
